'We can score at Barca'

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows all about improbable Champions League comebacks.
It was 20 years ago in Barcelona, where he scored the late winner against Bayern Munich after Teddy Sheringham had equalised just moments before, to give Manchester United a second European Cup.
Next Tuesday, at the same ground where Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 30 Champions League games since 2013, the manager believes United can summon that 1999 spirit to knock out the Catalans, who lead their quarter-final 1-0 thanks to Luke Shaw's 12th-minute own goal on Wednesday.
"We've scored goals at the Nou Camp before from corners and crosses," said Solskjaer, who suffered his fourth defeat in five matches since masterminding a miraculous comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16.
Last month, United became the first team to overcome a 2-0 first-leg home deficit and their 3-1 win in Paris gives the Red Devils "hope and belief we can do it".
Solskjaer added: "But we know we are playing against probably the tournament favourites and going to the Nou Camp will be a challenge.
"It will be a bigger achievement winning that one because with the history of Barcelona, they are not used to losing at home, but we can do it."
United can hope but, in their hearts, they must know that Barca are not PSG and, unless they can find a way to seeing more of the ball and using it to greater effect, they could end up with what they handed out to Lionel Messi: a bloodied nose.
With Messi looking mortal for a change, Barcelona were far from their best, but they still secured the win after Luis Suarez's far post header from the Argentinian's pass deflected in off Shaw and was confirmed by the video assistant referee after initially being given offside.
United defender Chris Smalling had said "bring it on" at the prospect of facing Messi on the eve of the game. And he left the 31-year-old bloodied from the nose as he careered into an aerial challenge on the half-hour mark.
United had excellent performers, with youngster Scott McTominay delivering a performance of real maturity, but Solskjaer simply cannot be happy with a quarter-final home leg that did not feature a single attempt on target.

  • 0

It is the first time Manchester United have failed to have a single shot on target in a Champions League game since March 2005, in a 1-0 loss at AC Milan.

  • 8

Luke Shaw's own goal was the eighth United have scored in the Champions League. No team have conceded more in the history of the competition.

Barca manager Ernesto Valverde is not taking anything for granted and said the tie is still finely poised.
"It leaves a good taste in the mouth to win here, but we know it is not a big enough lead given what happened (with PSG) in the last round," said the Spaniard.
United midfielder Paul Pogba said it is possible to win if they can be "killers in front of goal".
"We saw a team we can beat. If you don't believe that, then you just let them go through," he said.
"We believe we can beat them. They are Barcelona, but we are Manchester United... We have to avoid giving them chances and be killers in front of goal.
"We have to keep believing. It is a Champions League game and we know we can hurt them as well as they can hurt us."

Relatives raise funds to continue search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala

LONDON • Relatives of missing Premier League player Emiliano Sala on Saturday began a privately funded search for his plane, which disappeared over the English Channel, after local coast guard called off their own rescue mission.
The news was announced by an online fundraising campaign for the operation, and confirmed to Agence France-Presse by Maria Jose Sottini, a friend of the Argentinian striker's family.
"The appeal launched late Friday afternoon enabled Emiliano Sala's relatives, via a specialised organisation, to resume research in the Channel early this Saturday morning," said a statement on the GoFundMe website.
"Two boats are leading the operations."
Around 4,000 people have so far contributed to the campaign, which was organised by Sala's agency, Sport Cover, raising almost €321,343 (S$496,167).
The target of €300,000 was reached within a day.
According to the BBC, fellow footballers including Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot and Corentin Tolisso of Bayern Munich have donated to the fund, as did Sala's former manager at Nantes, Vahid Halilhodzic.
A light aircraft transporting Sala, who signed for Cardiff City two Saturdays ago, vanished from the radar around 20km north of the Channel island of Guernsey last Monday night.
The 28-year-old, who moved from French Ligue 1 club Nantes for a club-record fee of £15 million (S$26.7 million), had been flying to the Welsh capital for his first training session after saying goodbye to his former teammates.
Rescue workers formally called off the search for the missing plane on Thursday.
As investigators probe what happened, it emerged that while his football agent Willie McKay had arranged for the ill-fated flight, he did not choose the Piper Malibu plane or its pilot, who has since been named as David Ibbotson.
"We had no involvement in selecting a plane or a pilot and wish to make clear we do not own the plane that Emiliano flew on," the Briton said in a statement.

Football: Female staff member of Hougang United charged with CBT over $278,000 clubhouse funds

SINGAPORE - An employee of Singapore Premier League club Hougang United has been charged over the loss of more than $250,000 from their clubhouse operations.
While working as an admin assistant, Malaysian Tean Tai Tee allegedly misappropriated $278,200.
The 24-year-old woman was arrested and charged in court on Dec 16, 2018, with one count of criminal breach of trust by a clerk or servant. She is said to have committed the offence between Nov 29 and Dec 11.
Tean's bail was set at $100,000 and she is due back in court on March 12. If convicted, she can be jailed for up to 15 years, and fined.
Hougang confirmed with The Straits Times that the police report was made on the day of the incident.
An FAS spokesman said: "The Football Association of Singapore is aware of this matter, and had raised various inquiries with the club.
"A police report had been made, and the police have also arrested a club staff in connection with this matter. As the matter is currently under police investigation, we will not be able to comment further."
Currently, six of nine Singapore Premier League clubs - Albirex Niigata, Balestier Khalsa, Geylang International, Home United, Hougang and Warriors FC - run jackpot operations at their respective clubhouses.
Depending on the size of their clubhouse operations, they typically hold a few hundred thousand dollars in cash to pay out to winners.
In recent years, clubs with jackpot machines have faced a government crackdown on jackpot machine operators.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in 2017, seven clubs that did not meet the criteria to operate fruit machines were given six-month interim permits to wind down their jackpot operations by the end of April 2018.
These include former S-League (now rebranded Singapore Premier League or SPL) clubs Gombak United and Tanjong Pagar United.
SPL clubs have had to abide by new rules that include shorter opening hours and stricter membership regulation.
From December 2018, they also had to remove some machines from their clubhouses, as part of the MHA's move to further reduce the number of such machines in the country.
The first reduction took place in November 2018 and clubs can have a maximum of 15 machines by November 2019.

Football: Hougang United lose two-goal lead twice to draw 3-3 with 10-man Tampines Rovers

SINGAPORE - Two months ago, Tampines Rovers had beaten Hougang United 5-1 at Jalan Besar Stadium on March 3 when Hougang midfielder Justin Hui was sent off in the 50th minute.
On Sunday (May 5), the two Singapore Premier League (SPL) teams served up another six-goal feast at Our Tampines Hub.
It was another red card early in the second half which opened up the game and, once again, Hougang left the pitch wondering what might have been.
The Cheetahs had to settle for a 3-3 draw with the Stags despite having twice led by two goals with an extra man on the field following Tampines midfielder Yasir Hanapi's red card in the 51st minute.
A frustrated Hougang coach Clement Teo said: "We took our foot off the pedal a little and, psychologically, we were not strong enough.
"We knew we were 3-1 up and playing against 10 men and, if we switch off, we will be punished by a team like Tampines."
The first half was was akin to a cagey game of chess with both sides wary of making a mistake. Hougang drew first blood through South Korean defender Kong Ho-won, who headed home from a corner in the 30th minute.
Following Yasir's second yellow card for a needless tug on Muhaimin Suhaimi, Faris Ramli made it 2-0 with a beautiful curler in the 56th minute, only for Shah Shahiran to reply for Tampines a minute later with a shot that went in off the post.
Faris then saw another fine curling effort in the 63rd minute cannon off the crossbar, but he restored Hougang's two-goal advantage a minute later when he turned home Muhaimin's pinpoint cross for his eighth goal of the season.

But Tampines refused to roll over even with the numerical disadvantage. First, Zehrudin Mehmedovic swept home in the 67th minute before another substitute Khairul Amri completed the comeback in the 70th minute when he tapped in a cut-back by Jordan Webb.
Seconds before Amri's equaliser, Hougang striker Stipe Plazibat had beaten the Stags' offside trap only to see his shot come off the upright and out for a goal kick.
On losing their two-goal advantage twice, Teo said: "Definitely, this is not something the players are proud of and neither am I."
Tampines coach Gavin Lee said he was "massively proud" of his charges, particularly after a difficult midweek game in the AFC Cup against Myanmarese champions Yangon United, which they won 4-3 in injury time.
"The second half was an emotional roller coaster but, as coaches, we have to stay calm and do what we have to," he said. "We came out with a plan to attack and, even though we were a man down, that strategy didn't change.
"We were confident in what we wanted to do, and we just had to take a little more (risk). To go toe-to-toe over 90 minutes with a fresher side is really good."
In Sunday's other match, Albirex Niigata beat Geylang United 2-0 to leapfrog both Tampines and Hougang into second place on 17 points, six points behind leaders Brunei DPMM.
Third-placed Hougang have 16 points while Tampines (13) are fourth.

Football: Liverpool ease past Bayern 3-1 to reach Champions League last eight

MUNICH, Germany (REUTERS) - Sadio Mane scored twice to hand Liverpool a 3-1 victory at Bayern Munich on Wednesday (March 13) with a dominant performance that sent them through to the Champions League quarter-finals.
After the last-16 first leg ended goalless at Anfield, five-times European champions Liverpool took control in Munich, bossing the game and nullifying their German opponents to become the fourth English team into the last eight.
In-form Mane pounced on a needless charge out of his goal by Manuel Neuer in his 100th Champions League appearance, to round the Bayern keeper with a superb turn before chipping his finish into the empty net in the 26th minute.
The German champions levelled 13 minutes later against the run of play when winger Serge Gnabry beat his marker and his cutback was turned into the goal by Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
Centre back Virgil van Dijk, who had missed the first leg last month, killed off any German hopes of a comeback when he rose high to head home in the 69th minute before Mane headed in his second in the 84th.
Last season's runners-up Liverpool completed a full house of English teams in the last eight, the first time this has happened since the 2008/9 season, with Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City already through.
Bayern knew they had to be more adventurous than they had been at Anfield, but they were suffocated by Liverpool's intense pressing in the first half.
The Reds, beaten by Real Madrid in last season's final, suffered an early blow when captain Jordan Henderson hobbled off with an ankle injury.
Mane's goal gave them the edge but instead adding to their lead when they had the upper hand, Matip's own goal let Bayern back into the game against the run of play.
The Bavarians, who had reached the Champions League quarter-finals or better in each of the last seven seasons, needed a second with Liverpool heading through on the away goals rule.
Liverpool, however, kept up the pressure and were rewarded when Dutchman Van Dijk grabbed his third goal in his last four appearances in all competitions.
Mane completed a memorable win with a well-timed header after a delightful lofted pass from Mohamed Salah as Liverpool stretched their unbeaten run in Champions League last-16 matches to eight games following a 1-0 loss at home to Barcelona in the 2006/07.

Magic of the FA Cup alive and well

Magic of the FA Cup alive and well

LONDON • Whoever said the magic of the FA Cup was dead should have paid a visit to Kingsmeadow, The Den and the New Meadow on Saturday.
While the competition has taken a backseat to the Premier League and the Champions League in recent years, it still represents the perfect opportunity for English football's lesser lights to have their day in the sun.
And shine they did as AFC Wimbledon and Millwall humbled their top-tier opponents in the fourth round of the FA Cup in raucous post-game scenes at their respective home grounds.
Wimbledon revived memories of their "Crazy Gang" heyday in the late 80s, knocking West Ham out with a 4-2 win at Kingsmeadow.
The shock loss to Wimbledon, who are rock-bottom in League One, left Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini "ashamed" of his players.
He told reporters after his side went 3-0 down before the break: "Was I angry at half-time? Yes of course.
"I didn't expect it, the attitude, playing against a team that sits two divisions below us but, in football, you can lose in two or three balls.
"They started the way we needed to start and, when you have such high pace with the quality of the players... We didn't have the same level."
Wimbledon defender Toby Sibbick, who was born 11 years after the club won the 1988 FA Cup, their only major silverware - told BT Sport scoring the fourth goal had been "one of the highlights for me".
He added: "I thought the boys were excellent. It's a great win, look at the fans, this is what it's about."
Everton were also stunned by Championship strugglers Millwall 3-2 but, unlike Pellegrini, Marco Silva sought to deflect blame by pinning the defeat on the lack of a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
The Toffees felt aggrieved as their opponents' second goal appeared to go in off the arm of Jake Cooper.
To make matters worse, the strike was shown on a big screen in the stadium immediately afterwards, with the handball obvious to everyone watching at The Den.
Premier League grounds hosting FA Cup ties are using VAR this season but the technology was not installed at Millwall - a situation the Everton manager said was unfair.
Claiming "it does not make sense", the Portuguese bemoaned: "If we are to be fair with all the clubs, you have to be fair with the competition and you also have to do it for all the games.
"Now we go home with big frustration. I am not here just to be angry with the referee but it is true.
"It was a clear handball in the moment. The players, they saw and went to speak with the assistant and thousands of people saw (it) on the big screen."
Shrewsbury Town nearly made it a trio of upsets on a day of surprises and it took an added-time equaliser from Wolves' Matt Doherty to deny them a place in the fifth round.
The League One outfit were leading 2-0 after 70 minutes at New Meadow and Shrewsbury manager Sam Ricketts admitted to "real mixed emotions" after Nuno Espirito Santo's men forced a replay.
He told the BBC: "I base myself on performances and that was very, very good, but I am disappointed not to win the game."

There are those who suggest the oft-revered magic of the FA Cup has been lost in modern football and to some extent, there may be some truth to that sentiment. Memories of Ronnie Radford and Ricky Villa fade in the minds of those, dare I say, old enough to have witnessed them first-hand, while

SINGAPORE - Two games, two wins, 10 goals scored.
The 2019 Singapore Premier League may only be in its second round this week, but Tampines Rovers are proving themselves worthy contenders for their first domestic league title since 2013.
This, after the Stags thrashed fellow title contenders Home United 5-1 on Friday (March 8) at Our Tampines Hub, just five days after walloping Hougang United by the same score in their first match of the season.
Tampines have now scored almost a quarter of the 43 goals they netted over 24 games in the 2018 season, in just two games.
Tampines coach Gavin Lee said: "I think we did well; two wins out of two games is a good start but we have to be cautious now because every team that play us will be coming for us.
"I think that the result really flattered us but the message today was simple: we had to work hard, we had to match them for their desire and determination.
"But I think towards the end of the game we should've controlled the game a lot better. We gave away too much and the boys know that."
Both sides attacked from the get-go, with the home side missing an opportunity to take the lead early, when Taufik Suparno missed from the penalty spot in the 14th minute.
As in the Hougang match, goals by Irwan Shah and Jordan Webb bookended the eastern giants' scoring on home ground on Friday, with Yasir Hanapi, Taufik and captain Shahdan Sulaiman adding their names to the score sheet.
Adam Swandi gave the Protectors a consolation goal in the 57th minute to prevent a total whitewash.
Despite the loss, Home United coach Saswadimata Dasuki was still proud of his team for putting up a good fight.
He said: "Before the penalty I thought the boys were controlling (Tampines) well by minimising their space and time.
"After the second goal, I thought that we could still get back into the game but a mistake by my defender caused us to be 3-0 down and there was a mountain for us to climb against a very good team.
"I hope the boys don't give up because it's just two games. I hope that they keep on going."
Despite the maulings of two fellow title contenders, Lee is tamping down on the title talk.
He said: "There are 22 more games to go and anything can happen in the 22 games. It's a long season and we're not thinking about the end of the season. We're just taking one game at a time. Consistency is our target."

Despite being regarded as possibly one of the contenders in the 2019 Singapore Premier League, Hougang United were handily beaten by Tampines Rovers 5-1. Things were especially difficult for the
