Bayern won't splash out for big squad revamp

MUNICH • Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness had called their summer transfer window "the biggest investment programme in our history" after splashing out a combined €115 million (S$177.1 million) for France defenders Benjamin Pavard and Lucas Hernandez.
But, after sealing their seventh successive German Bundesliga title and their 29th overall with a 5-1 home thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday, he declared that the club were not planning to break their transfer record again.
The Bavarian giants had been expected to surpass the club-record €80 million fee paid to Atletico Madrid for Hernandez as they set about a major squad overhaul ahead of next season, with veterans Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben leaving in the close season on free transfers.
RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt and Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel have been linked to the club in recent months.
However, Hoeness is not prepared to make any more big-money moves as "we are not playing monopoly here".
The former West Germany forward said: "We are a football club. We have reached the 80 million mark, and I don't think we will go beyond that."
There will still be new faces, though, just not on the scale of the Hernandez and Pavard transfers, with Hoeness promising to "certainly not stop making changes to our team and will continue with the overhaul".
Chief executive officer Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has set his sights on a new winger, telling German daily Bild "we need another good alternative beside Alphonso Davies because we are losing Robben and Ribery".
Chelsea forward Callum Hudson-Odoi remains on the club's radar, having made four unsuccessful bids for the 18-year-old in the January transfer window, and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic will be "active again" after this weekend's German Cup final.
Having secured the title, Bayern hope to complete a fifth domestic double since 2010 when they face RB Leipzig on Saturday but, regardless of the result, coach Niko Kovac feels his job is safe despite having come under pressure this season.
After being drenched in wheat beer during Bayern's customary title celebrations, he told Sky Sports: "I'm convinced that I will continue. I am working on the assumption that I will fulfil the remaining two years of my contract.
"It has been an exhausting year, you can probably see that in my beard and my hair."
Reports last week suggested the Croat would be shown the door even if he won the double.

Football: Samir Nasri completes West Ham move in return from doping ban

(REUTERS) - West Ham United have signed free agent Samir Nasri until the end of the campaign with the French midfielder having completed an 18-month doping ban, the Premier League side said on Monday (Dec 31).
The former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder had been training with the Hammers since last month and is free to resume playing from Jan 1.
"You choose a club and a project because of the ambition, and I think that West Ham has everything to be one of the biggest clubs in London," Nasri told West Ham's website.
"Coming back to the most competitive league in the world, with a team full of ambition with a manager that I know. It's the best job in the world, and I'm really excited about it." West Ham have the option to extend the 31-year-old's deal by a year, the club added.
Nasri's original six-month ban for a drip treatment that contravened World Anti-Doping Agency rules was increased to 18 months in August after an appeal by Uefa's ethics and disciplinary inspector.
Nasri played for Arsenal between 2008-2011 and joined City for a spell that included two league titles and a League Cup before he fell out of favour following the arrival of manager Pep Guardiola.
The former France international joined Spanish side Sevilla on a season-long loan in 2016 before sealing a permanent switch to Turkish side Antalyaspor, who he left in January by mutual consent.

Real top football's rich list, United down to third

Real top football's rich list, United down to third
LONDON • European champions Real Madrid displaced Manchester United as the world's highest-earning football club after the Premier League side's underperformance on the pitch in recent seasons ate into their dominance off it.
United slumped to third place, below both Real and Barcelona based on revenue for the 2017-18 season, financial services firm Deloitte said in its annual Football Money League yesterday.
The Red Devils have been the wealthiest club for two of the past three years and eight times in the last two decades.
Clubs in the Premier League - which has the highest broadcast revenue - took six of the top-10 spots, but LaLiga's two biggest teams prevailed thanks to their Champions League prowess and supremacy at home.
The changing of the guard in football's financial list mirrors the contrasting on-field fortunes of United and Real of late. Santiago Solari's men have won the Champions League for the last three seasons while, in the same period, United have failed to get past the last 16.
Their annual revenue was also hit by a slump in the British pound, growing only 1.5 per cent to £590 million (S$1 billion). Real, on the other hand, surged 11 per cent to €751 million (S$1.1 billion).
A spokesman for United said the club were "not too concerned" about financial league tables from year to year as the team remain a top global sports brand by any measure.
Part of their confidence lies in the fact that the Premier League still dominates the money pile.

There are a further five English top-flight teams in the top 10, including Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, with even relegation-threatened Newcastle making the top-20 cut despite going trophyless since 1969.
Tottenham, who are waiting to move into a 62,000-capacity stadium, re-entered the top 10 for the first time since the 2006-07 term.
Italian Serie A champions Juventus, meanwhile, dropped out of the top 10 for the first time since the 2010-11 season despite signing former Real talisman Cristiano Ronaldo in the close season.
Weaker broadcast revenue in Italy relative to other big European leagues means Juventus have to do better than their rivals in the Champions League to bridge the gap.
Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who are backed by wealthy Middle East owners, are in fifth and sixth place.
Both are, however, facing claims they have breached the Financial Fair Play regulations, but City and PSG have denied any wrongdoing.

Ole gives stars 'licence to express', says Yorke

Ole gives stars 'licence to express', says Yorke

From the combative Roy Keane to the glamorous David Beckham and the trickery of George Best, Manchester United's heroes have all come with standout traits.
But breaking the mould is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the modest Norwegian who is doing wonders at Old Trafford in an unflashy manner, without donning a cape nor being a force of personality, according to former teammate Dwight Yorke.
"Ole's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet in football. He doesn't give you any drama, he just gets on with his job, he's totally professional in what he does," the 47-year-old ex-Trinidad and Tobago international striker said yesterday in reply to The Straits Times' question on whether Solskjaer's managerial brilliance was evident during his playing days.
"I just didn't see him at this level.
"Like everything else, you need a little luck and fortune and he got that. You got to grasp these opportunities. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him."
Yorke was speaking on the sidelines at the launch of this year's International Champions Cup (ICC) Singapore at the Incubator, near the Padang.
On July 20, the Red Devils will take on Inter Milan and a day later, Juventus will meet Tottenham Hotspur.

  • Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United are the first team to advance in the Champions League knockout rounds after losing the first leg at home by two goals.

British media has reported that Solskjaer is set for a permanent deal at Old Trafford this week and Yorke certainly believes the former striker is the right man to take United forward.
He said: "He has done a remarkable job, there is no question about that. The doubters who think that he wasn't capable of doing a job can pretty much eat their words now.
"May he continue to take the team forward. He's looking good, he's got the players playing with the passion and desire that we expect of a Man United player. That will be the case going forward."
Since Solskjaer took over on Dec 19 after Jose Mourinho's sacking, not only had he restored the team's competitive edge and playing style, he had also done so while smashing records.
He had won 14 out of 19 games, became the first United manager to win his first eight matches, surpassing Matt Busby's five, won a club record of nine consecutive away games and, by dumping Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League last 16, they became the first team in the tournament's history to advance after losing the first leg at home by two goals or more.
The key to the Red Devils' surge in form has been the caretaker's perceptive man-management skills, said Yorke.
He added: "I always think we have exceptional young players but these young players were not given the licence to express themselves, and expression is a word you associate a lot with Man United.
"When you just look at the talent that we have, nothing has changed.
"Our attackers (Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial) are as good as any other in the Premier League.
"It's about expressing themselves and exposing their talent. They have managed to do that under Ole."
Come July 20, Singapore fans will get the chance to watch the Red Devils express themselves, and fittingly, hear the classic chant "ole, ole" reverberate in the National Stadium.

Reds 'on fire' but Klopp wary of Porto side eyeing revenge

Reds 'on fire' but Klopp wary of Porto side eyeing revenge

LONDON • Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that while Porto were not the opponents he had hoped to draw in the Champions League quarter-finals, the same could be applied to his team.
The Portuguese champions were humiliated 5-0 on their home patch by the Reds in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie last season and they were unable to turn things around in the reverse fixture.
Asked whether he was aware that Porto, who will travel to Merseyside without banned duo Pepe and Hector Herrera, were on a "revenge" mission today, Klopp said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "100 per cent, I understand that.
"I thought last season after we won 5-0, 'Okay, we should not come here for a while' and then we are back this year.
"It was a strange game, we were clinical, two or three goals from counter-attacks.
"The result from last year is more valuable for Porto than it is for us. We have to be strong, clear, direct in the right moments and creative.
"We didn't want Porto, to be honest... People with a proper idea about football didn't. That's the truth. But nobody (also) wanted Liverpool. It'll be tough, but we're really looking forward to it."
Dismissing claims Porto would again be rank outsiders against his team, Klopp insisted the Anfield meeting would be "a proper Champions League game" although he conceded that "we're on fire at the moment".
The German added: "It's the top team in Portugal. I don't think it's normal that a team is so organised.
"They showed it against Roma (in the previous round) and in all the Champions League games (this term). It's a different game to last year and we have to play it again. It will be tough for both."
While Liverpool will be without the suspended Andy Robertson, Klopp has few other injury worries to contend with after confirming fellow defender Virgil van Dijk and midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum are likely to shake off minor knocks to take their place in his starting XI.
He also revealed that defender Joe Gomez, who has been out since December after having surgery for a leg fracture, and midfielder Adam Lallana, who missed the St Mary's game with a muscle issue, were nearing their comebacks.
Van Dijk, who like Klopp spoke to reporters yesterday, agreed with his boss' assessment that Porto "deserve to be in the quarter-finals", but the team were still confident as "if you look at the season, the results we have at Anfield in particular, Liverpool are the favourites".
Joking that he "would not miss Robertson" at all, the Dutch international also touched on the Premier League title race, declaring "everybody is dreaming of it".
He added: "Hopefully, it can be something great at the end of the season. But we can already hold our heads high.
"It's game by game. Tomorrow is big, because we can set a base to take with us to Portugal. In the league, any slip-up can end our title dreams. It's Porto, then after that Chelsea. It's the only way we should think."
