Football: Spurs to trigger Alderweireld contract extension, says Pochettino

LONDON (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said the club will activate a one-year extension in defender Toby Alderweireld's contract to keep him at the club until 2020.
The move prevents Belgium international Alderweireld, who has been linked with a move to Manchester United by the British media, from leaving on a free transfer at the end of the season.
When asked whether Spurs intend to trigger the clause, Pochettino told a news conference: "Yes, for sure, it's obvious. The same situation as Jan (Vertonghen)."
Earlier this month, Spurs extended centre back Vertonghen's contract until 2020.
Alderweireld, who arrived at Spurs in July 2015 from Atletico Madrid, has been a key player for the north London outfit this season, making 24 appearances in all competitions.
Having won their last five Premier League games, Spurs have crept up to second spot and are six points behind leaders Liverpool.
But Pochettino said it is still premature to talk of Tottenham as title contenders.
"We are there because we have the belief, because we are working hard and of course we have the quality," he said.
"It is hard to be in the position that we are in. Still we are a question mark. We will see if we are capable during the whole season to be consistent like in the first half of the season. Then we can talk that we can fight for big things."
Spurs said full back Serge Aurier has returned to training after recovering from a groin problem, while midfielder Dele Alli will be assessed ahead of Saturday's league clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Alli missed the 5-0 victory over Bournemouth on Boxing Day, having been substituted during last weekend's 6-2 triumph at Everton over a hamstring concern.

Football: Five things we learnt from the Premier League weekend

Football: Five things we learnt from the Premier League weekend

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Liverpool took another significant step towards a first top-flight title in 29 years by thrashing Arsenal 5-1 to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, thanks also to Tottenham's collapse at home to Wolves.
Manchester City are once again Liverpool's closest challengers ahead of a blockbuster clash between the two on Thursday (Dec 27) as the champions recovered from back-to-back defeats to beat Southampton 3-1.
Manchester United's revival since Jose Mourinho's sacking continued with Paul Pogba again scoring twice to beat Bournemouth 4-1, but United remain eight points off the top four after Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 1-0.
Here, AFP Sports looks at five things we learnt from the Premier League's final fixtures of 2018.

Liverpool's title to lose?

The league leaders haven't lost all season and unless City end their invincible campaign so far at the Etihad this week, it is looking increasingly likely that Liverpool's time has come.
The reaction at times of adversity often makes the mark of champions and after falling behind for the first time in the league at Anfield in nearly a year, Liverpool were ahead within five minutes against Arsenal.

Roberto Firmino scored a hat-trick, while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were also on target as the front three that fired Jurgen Klopp's men to the Champions League final last season all scored in the same league game for the first time this campaign.
Should that front three hit top form to compliment a defensive record of eight goals conceded in 20 games, it is hard to see how Liverpool will be stopped.

City's response of champions

The champions weren't at their sparkling best, but got what Pep Guardiola admitted was the most important thing - a win - to restore some confidence before they try to end Liverpool's unbeaten start.
"If you want to be there as far as possible until the end we have to remember what happened last season and this (season) as well - apart from the last few days," insisted Guardiola.
The return of David Silva, who scored City's opener, and Fernandinho to the midfield made a massive difference and City may even have Kevin de Bruyne back too in time for Thursday.

Spurs run out of steam

Despite a run of five straight victories, Tottenham were always seen as outsiders in the title race and any chance they had may have disappeared by Wolves' late show as the visitors scored three times in the final 18 minutes to win 3-1 at Wembley.
Spurs were in total control in the first half but the strains of 29 games in three competitions on a stretched squad in the first five months of the season began to show in a tired performance after the break.
"Today for us it's a clear example that if we are not consistent enough, with not only good quality during the game, and the right energy, it's difficult to compete for big things," said a disappointed Mauricio Pochettino.

Emery's Arsenal stalling

Arsene Wenger was chastised when Arsenal conceded four at Anfield last August at the beginning of his final season in charge at Arsenal. On Saturday, Unai Emery's side had conceded four by half-time.
Despite a 22-game unbeaten run between August and December, Arsenal are now just one point better off after 20 games than they were last season when finishing sixth.
In contrast to their last meeting with Liverpool in a 1-1 draw in November when Emery's impact had Arsenal re-energised and freshly filled with optimism, the Gunners looked mentally and physically soft when met with Liverpool's pace, power and belief.
Chelsea now have a five-point cushion in the race for a top-four finish and defensive reinforcements are clearly needed in January if Arsenal are to compete for a Champions League return.

Near-perfect Pogba

What a difference little more than a week has made to spirits at Manchester United.
Eight days ago life without Jose Mourinho began with a 5-1 thrashing of Cardiff, while both Huddersfield and Bournemouth have now been sent packing from Old Trafford with the sort of routine defeat United fans expect.
Paul Pogba wasn't even on the pitch for the final act of Mourinho's reign as he sat on the bench for the full 90 minutes in defeat to Liverpool, but Solskjaer's promise to build his team around the Frenchman has paid off instantly.
After scoring twice against Huddersfield, Pogba bagged another double on Sunday as well as setting up Romelu Lukaku's fourth goal and hitting the post.
This version of the midfielder is the one United thought they were buying when paying a then world record £89 million to Juventus in 2016.

Football: Guardiola places faith in Jesus with Aguero injured

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City will be without injured leading scorer Sergio Aguero as they try to regain the advantage in the Premier League title race against struggling Cardiff on Wednesday (April 3).
A thigh injury means the Premier League's leading marksman - he has 19 goals to his name - will sit it out with Brazil star Gabriel Jesus taking his place.
Victory over a side they thrashed 5-0 in the away fixture earlier this season would see City leapfrog Liverpool to lead the title race by a point, with both having played the same number of games.
City manager Pep Guardiola admitted Aguero faces a race to be fit for the FA Cup semi-final with Brighton on Saturday and the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final away to Tottenham next Tuesday.
"Tomorrow (Wednesday) Sergio is not able to play," said Guardiola. "He didn't train the last two days.
"Hopefully, he can on Saturday or next Tuesday. We will see his evolution in the next few days."
Guardiola, whose side is bidding for a historic quadruple in winning the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Champions League to add to their League Cup success already this term, has faith in Jesus being able to fill in for Aguero.
"Gabriel is ready," said Guardiola.
"He is having a good season and it is not always easy to play in this club as a striker in the same position as Sergio.
"He is fighting against one legend and an incredible top player in his best season since we have been at the club.
"When Gabriel played, he played well. Tomorrow he is going to help us and fight and score goals and create space for others."
City might still have been top but for a late error by France's World Cup-winning captain Hugo Lloris gifting Liverpool all three points on Sunday in a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
"When you see that, you say 'Ah s**t'," he said.
"But after five or ten minutes, you think it's a nice but terrible challenge.
"Nobody said it would be easy. Nobody. We knew it and I knew it.
"Everybody is excited for what we are going to live in the next weeks.
"Let's beat Cardiff for the main target to go back top of the league with six games left.
"After that we live again, Wembley, to achieve the one final (FA Cup) I never experienced in my life in the oldest trophy, and after that the Champions League."

Football: My players must want the ball, says new Lions coach Tatsuma Yoshida

SINGAPORE - He envisions a pacy and attacking brand of football for the Lions, and new national coach Tatsuma Yoshida was quick to emphasise this philosophy to his players during his first training session on Monday (June 3).
The workout at the Jalan Besar Stadium consisted of a keep-ball rondo exercise followed by four-versus-two or six-versus-two passing and movement drills. He later divided the squad into two teams for a friendly game to work on tactical positioning.
At his unveiling last Thursday, the 44-year-old Japanese had admitted his English is limited, but he still managed to get his point across to his team, routinely shouting instructions like "faster", "together", and "take your position".
Yoshida, who was appointed on a two-year deal and replaces V. Sundram Moorthy, later told The Straits Times: "Today is okay, but I want more. The two objectives for today was to see the players' conditions and introduce some basic tactical principles such as attacking with width and keeping our defensive shape.
"I'm happy with the effort and hard work... but we have to improve a lot and the concentration needs to increase. I know it is the fasting month, so I will increase the intensity after Hari Raya.
"The quality is not too bad, but not very good. Some players have better technique, while some have not enough but make up for it with energy."
Despite limping due to a heel injury he sustained in Japan several weeks ago, Yoshida - with a constant smile - moved around the artificial turf and demonstrated what he expected from the drills.

He was accompanied by Albirex Niigata Under-15s coach Ryo Ishibashi, serving as a translator, while assistant coach Nazri Nasir also bellowed instructions in Malay.
Yoshida said: "Football is all about coordinating your physical abilities with your thoughts, and I wanted the players' passing to be rhythmical.
"I want the players to be more aggressive in attack and in retrieving possession after losing the ball. If we want to be a ball-playing team, we need to have confidence first, the players must want the ball."
During the informal game, he was seen pulling winger Gabriel Quak aside to give more instructions. After training, Yoshida was also giving forward Adam Swandi pointers.
Quak said: "Despite his basic English, it was a good first training session in which he let the team know more about the style he wants.
"We focused more on passing in the small-group drills and practised the movements he wants us to replicate during games.
"During the two-sided game, he told me to hug the line. I think it's similar to Japan's style of stretching the opponents using width. The transition from defence to attack, and from attack to defence, is also important to him, and we can begin to see his attention to such details.
"At least to me, it seems like he does not favour the slow and patient build-up play and prefers us to play with more pace. He also doesn't want the long balls, unless we have managed to get our opponents to lose their shape."
The Republic face Solomon Islands and Myanmar in the upcoming friendlies on Saturday (June 8) and next Tuesday (June 11) respectively.
Besides the tactical fine-tuning, Yoshida also showed his human touch when he concluded the session under the scheduled two hours as most of his players are fasting.
Skipper Hariss Harun appreciated the gesture and said: "It is nice of him to try and understand our culture. We can tell he is trying his best to communicate with us in English, and with the translator, we had no big issues.
"As for the kind of football he wants of us - being organised and compact in defence, winning possession quickly after we lose it, and fast-paced attack - we need to be ready and work really hard because the faster we can adapt, the better it will be for the team."

Football: 'Decisive' Messi downs Sevilla with 50th career hat-trick

SEVILLE, Spain (REUTERS) - Lionel Messi scored his 50th career hat-trick to fire Barcelona to a 4-2 win at Sevilla on Saturday (Feb 23) after the champions had twice fallen behind, giving the Catalans a 10-point lead at the top of La Liga.
Sevilla, who have only won once in the league in 2019, took the lead midway through the first half through veteran winger Jesus Navas but were soon pegged back by an unstoppable volley from Messi.
The home side capitalised on sleepy defending from Barca to re-take the lead before halftime as Gabriel Mercado pounced in the area.
Barca coach Ernesto Valverde made two attacking changes at the start of the second period by introducing Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto and got the intended reaction when the France winger laid the ball off to Messi just inside the area and the Argentine lashed it into the top corner.
Messi, who has struggled for form in recent weeks due to a niggling injury, looked on a mission to grab the winner and after twice coming close he completed his treble to put Barca ahead in the 85th minute, reacting quickly to a poor Sevilla clearance to dink the ball over goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.
Luis Suarez made sure of the points by scoring deep in stoppage time, chipping Vaclik after being played through by a pass from Messi.
Barca lead the standings on 57 points after 25 games while second-placed Atletico Madrid have 47 but can reduce the gap back to seven when they host Villarreal on Sunday.
Sevilla fell to fifth, slipping out of the Champions League places behind Getafe.

MESSI DELIVERS

"Messi is decisive and superlative, every team has decisive players but we have the best in the world," said Barca coach Ernesto Valverde.
"It's not just his goals either, but because he always delivers in the right place at the right time."
Sevilla had endured a humiliating 3-0 loss at struggling Villarreal last week but before the game Valverde warned of the Andalusians outstanding record at their Sanchez Pizjuan, where they had thrashed Real Madrid 3-0 and beaten Barca 2-0 in the Copa del Rey this season.
They took the lead through a lightning quick counter-attack as Wissam Ben Yedder marauded down the pitch and played in Navas, who took one touch to control and the other to slide the ball through the legs of the diving Gerard Pique and beyond the outstretched Marc-Andre ter Stegen into the bottom corner.
Sevilla's intensity prevented Barca from replicating their usual slick passing game and it took a superb goal from Messi to pull them level, the Argentine swivelling to meet a cross from Ivan Rakitic on the volley, leaving Vaclik with no chance.
Sevilla are Messi's favourite victims, and last year he came off the bench to score twice in two minutes and rescue a 2-0 draw from 2-0 down.
He went one better this time and has now scored 36 times in 37 games against the Andalusians.
"It's always tough to win here, we know what it is like to come to this stadium and how good Sevilla's players are, they made things very hard for us by taking the lead but we knew how to overcome all that," Messi added.
It was his 44th hat-trick for Barca, with 32 coming in La Liga, eight in the Champions League, three in the Copa del Rey and one in the Spanish Super Cup. He has also struck six trebles for Argentina.

Football: DC United's Wayne Rooney sees red for first time in MLS as Rossi nets hat-trick in LAFC's 4-0 win

(REUTERS) - Wayne Rooney was sent off for the first time in Major League Soccer (MLS) after the DC United forward made a poorly-timed lunging tackle on Los Angeles FC striker Diego Rossi on Saturday (April 6).
The 33-year-old, in his second season with DC United, lost control of the ball and lunged with both feet off the ground just as Rossi took a touch. His studs landed hard on Rossi's leg, just below the knee, scything down the Uruguayan.
The referee initially produced a yellow card but following a check with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), he changed his decision and showed the former England international a straight red card.
"I have no arguments," Rooney, who is England's leading scorer, told reporters. "It wasn't malicious, I didn't try to hurt him.
"But obviously I caught him. I was expecting (a red card) really when the referee gave me the yellow. It's the right call."
It was Rooney's first red card since 2014 and the seventh of his career for club and country. DC United, who were 3-0 down at the time, lost 4-0 as Rossi completed a hat-trick.

Wayne Rooney was on target as DC United brought a run of two consecutive defeats to an end with a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids. Rooney latched onto a throughball from Luciano Acosta to beat Tim Howard and score his first MLS goal and it looked like that might be enough for victory until Kellyn Acosta, who earlier missed a penalty, levelled.

Football: Chelsea boss Sarri, under fire after limp loss to Manchester United, doesn't fear the sack

Football: Chelsea boss Sarri, under fire after limp loss to Manchester United, doesn't fear the sack

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri insists he isn't worried about being sacked as Chelsea manager despite his troubled side's lacklustre FA Cup surrender against Manchester United.
The Italian faces a fight to save his job after FA Cup holders Chelsea crashed to a 2-0 fifth-round defeat at Stamford Bridge on Monday (Feb 18).
Ander Herrera headed United into the lead from Paul Pogba's cross in the 31st minute.
France star Pogba doubled United's advantage on the stroke of half-time when he met Marcus Rashford's cross with a diving header.
Sarri endured chants of "You don't know what you're doing" and "You're getting sacked in the morning" as furious Chelsea fans showed their frustration at the club's fifth defeat in their last 10 games.
Chelsea's stars, publicly criticised by their manager on several occasions this term, hardly looked to be battling to keep the Italian as they failed to muster a shot on target after the 11th minute.
Sarri's fragile relationship with his players, combined with the mutinous atmosphere among supporters, increased the feeling that the former Napoli boss might not survive until the end of his first season with Chelsea.
Demanding Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has acted quickly in the past when managers have been perceived to have lost the support of the squad.
But Sarri is adamant he isn't concerned about his perilous position and he claimed he is solely focused on salvaging his club's turbulent season.
Asked if he was worried Abramovich might be ready to wield the axe, Sarri said: "It's not my problem.

"I was only worried about my position when I was in League 2 in Italy, not now.
"I am worried about the results, not about the fans. Of course I can understand the situation.
"I can understand our fans, because the result wasn't really good. We are out of the FA Cup."
Chelsea supporters called for their club's former legend Frank Lampard, now in charge at Derby, to be hired and directed foul-mouthed abuse at Sarri, who suffered chants of "F*** Sarri-ball" in a scathing reference to his failing tactics.
"Not really very well, but sometimes yes. For everything there is the first time," he said when quizzed on whether he had heard the taunts from his own fans.
Sarri believes his situation will be improved significantly if Chelsea can string together a winning run, starting with the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie against Malmo on Thursday and the League Cup final against Manchester City on Sunday.
"It's really very easy. If we are able to win three or four matches in a row, it will be easy. Of course it's difficult to win five matches in a row," he said with a curious smirk that suggested he didn't really believe his own outward optimism.
"We need of course more aggression, more determination in the situation inside our box and inside the opposing box.
"My job is to work with my players to try and improve in a few days because we conceded the second goal without determination or aggression.
"The difference was there. We played 78 balls in the opposing box and United only 16 balls our box. We are supposed to win."
