Singapore 1
(Oman win 5-4 on penalties)

His tenure may had lasted only two matches but, in his short time in charge, Nazri Nasir had made his mark as the Singapore national team's caretaker coach.
Armed with a clear plan for attacking football, unshakeable belief in his men and inspiring team talks, the Lions (world ranking 165) punched above their weight and took Oman (world ranking 90) to penalties in last night's AirMarine Cup final in Kuala Lumpur.
They drew 1-1 in regulation time before losing 5-4 on penalties.
"I am so proud of the boys," he told The Sunday Times after the game, which saw goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud (swollen foot) rested and captain Hariss Harun (groin strain) start the game on the bench.
"There is nothing else I can ask for from them. They showed true character. At half-time (with Singapore trailing 1-0), I told them there are 45 minutes more. They can go out fighting or they can go out. They have nothing to lose. And looking at their reactions, I got the feeling that we will equalise."
The Omanis struck first at the Bukit Jalil Stadium in the 28th minute through Aziz Al Maqbali's header from midfielder Raed Saleh's cross.
But in the last minute of stoppage time, substitute striker Khairul Nizam was brought down outside the box and earned a free kick.
Several Lions crammed into Oman's wall to make space for Zulfahmi Arifin to place the ball into the top corner for his first international goal.
"Zul just picked his spot, he has a very natural left foot," said Nazri in praising the Hougang United midfielder.
However, with no extra-time in this friendly tournament, it was straight to penalties. There, Safuwan Baharudin, Yasir Hanapi, Amirul Adli and Hariss all netted but Faris Ramli, Singapore's fourth taker, crashed his effort against the bar while Erwin Koeman's men all converted.
The Lions reached the final after beating hosts Malaysia 1-0 on Wednesday while Oman thrashed Afghanistan 5-0.
In the day's earlier game, Malaysia defeated Afghanistan 2-1 to finish third in the quadrangular tournament.
And with the Football Association of Singapore set to announce its new national coach in June, Nazri hopes the new trainer can keep faith in the current lot.
He said: "Man-management is very important in football. If you can win the hearts of the players, you are easily one-up.
"I told the players - win or lose, I believe in you and I will take the blame.
"These boys fought all the way for me, they gave me 100 per cent."

EPL clubs opposed to European changes
LONDON • Premier League clubs have come out fighting in the face of sweeping proposals to change the Champions League format, insisting they will "vigorously defend" the domestic game.
The 20 teams issued a statement after a meeting in London on Friday when they were told of moves by the European Clubs' Association (ECA) to significantly expand the number of European matches, and replace the system where the top four English teams qualify for the Champions League.
The chairmen were told that the threats to the league were two-fold. Firstly, changes to the calendar from 2024 could see the slots available for domestic games cut and those for Europe increased.
Secondly, changing the Champions League to four groups of eight teams, with promotion and relegation rather than teams qualifying from domestic leagues, would negatively impact on the race for the top four, one of the driving forces of fan interest.
The statement read: "All clubs unanimously agreed it is inappropriate for European football bodies to create plans that would alter the structures, calendar and competitiveness of the domestic game and will work together to protect the Premier League."
The extra matches - from six to 14 - would require a radical shake-up of the club calendar. But the clubs have been told that it is a real possibility - the calendar for after 2024 is being determined by the ECA along with Uefa and Fifa.
While legal action is a possibility if the fixture calendar is affected, they also have support from the European Leagues organisation. Lars-Christer Olsson, its president, said: "Our main objective is to safeguard domestic competitions."

Football: Girona knock Atletico out of Copa del Rey in six-goal thriller

MADRID (REUTERS) - Atletico Madrid crashed out of the Copa del Rey to Girona on Wednesday (Jan 16) following a highly entertaining 3-3 draw at home to the Catalan side, who sneaked through to the quarter-finals on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.
Atletico substitute Antoine Griezmann looked to have completed a late turnaround for Diego Simeone's side, who were trailing 2-1 in the second half, when he put the hosts 3-2 up in the 84th minute.
Yet Girona forward Seydou Doumbia delivered a final twist in the saga by scoring at the other end four minutes later.
Croatian forward Nikola Kalinic had fired Atletico into an early lead but the packed Wanda Metropolitano stadium was stunned into silence by a jaw-dropping volley from Girona winger Valery Fernandez in the 36th minute.
Atletico, already missing several first-team regulars to injury, lost Spain midfielder Saul Niguez to a muscle problem early in the second half.
They suffered another setback soon after when Cristhian Stuani headed Girona in front following a free kick, sparking furious but futile protests from Atletico who claimed the Uruguayan had fouled their captain Diego Godin.
Griezmann came off the bench on the hour mark and soon threaded a pass towards Kalinic which Argentine winger Angel Correa squeezed under Girona's goalkeeper to equalise.
Godin then hit the crossbar and Santiago Arias had a goal ruled out for offside as Atletico chased a winner.
France forward Griezmann prompted wild celebrations when he smashed into the roof of the net, but the mood was soon punctured by Doumbia, also a substitute, who poked home a shot from Borja Garcia to send Girona through and dump out Atletico, who have not won the Copa del Rey since 2013.

The match at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid will be screened live at Our Tampines Hub's (OTH) Town Square, which can seat 5,000.
Admission is free, but is on a first-come-first-served basis from 6.30pm on Saturday, with the first 5,000 receiving a gift. There will be free movie screenings from 7pm to 1am, when the pre-match commentary broadcast will begin.
The game kicks off at 3am.
Should the Town Square reach full capacity, supporters can also catch the live telecast at the Festive Plaza within the Hub.
There will be live entertainment at the Plaza from midnight till 3am, along with fringe activities outside the team sports hall (level two) from midnight till 4am.
More food and beverage outlets at the Hub will be extending their operating hours to complement those that are already operating 24 hours daily. Its hawker centre will also have stalls operating past 3am.
Liverpool fan and full-time national serviceman Timothy Low, 22, lives a five-minute walk from OTH. He plans to attend the screening with five friends, some of whom are Spurs supporters.
"I don't know if we'll be friends after the match," he quipped. "It's good OTH offers free screening because some of my friends don't subscribe to football channels.
"It's a place where my friends and I can watch the match together and shout rather than going to someone's house and not having (that same) atmosphere."
There will also be a free live broadcast of the final at the Sundown Marathon race village at the F1 Pit Building. It is open to the public and those supporting the runners. Randy Tan, general manager of the race organiser Infinitus Productions, said: "We believe in the celebration of sports, be it running or football. We are glad to be able to partner beIN Sports and Singtel TV to bring sports fans together and screen the final."
The official supporters' clubs in Singapore of the English teams are also organising their own sold-out screenings.

Football: Kane making 'fantastic' recovery, says Spurs boss Pochettino

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino says Harry Kane is making a "fantastic" recovery and could be back in action ahead of schedule following the ankle injury he suffered last month against Manchester United.
Kane was initially ruled out until March, but Spurs boss Pochettino said the England captain could feature in his side's Premier League match at Burnley on Feb 23.
"Now he is here, he is doing well, he is doing fantastic. You know very well we need to stop him every day because he wants to be ahead of his recovery," Pochettino said on Friday (Feb 8) ahead of Tottenham's clash with Leicester on Sunday.
"He's very optimistic and determined to play as soon as possible - it's unbelievable but he's doing well.
"If you see him he's nearly ready to play but we need to be realistic too and of course in between all the areas to take the best decision.
"He's so close to coming back again. Not for Sunday, not for Wednesday but we will see after."
Pochettino, whose side are third in the Premier League, five points behind Manchester City and Liverpool, spoke of his disappointment that their clash with Leicester has been moved to Sunday for television when Spurs face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The Argentine also said he felt it would be "tough" for Tottenham to move into their new stadium before the end of the season.
The club announced another delay to the grand opening earlier this week, confirming that the north London derby against Arsenal on March 2 will now take place at their temporary home of Wembley.
Spurs were originally due to move into their new 62,000-seater White Hart Lane stadium for the start of the current campaign.
The move has been put back on numerous occasions and now, with the Arsenal game confirmed as being played at Wembley, there are just five home games left.
Asked if he still expected to relocate before the end of the season, he said: "My gut feeling (is that) it will be tough but I hope and I wish to be in the new stadium."
Pochettino also denied that he and assistant coach Jesus Perez had a secret dinner date with David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane during the week.
With Beckham and Zidane both having played for Real Madrid and Pochettino heavily linked with the managerial post at the Bernabeu, the rumour mill was sent spinning when all were photographed leaving the same London restaurant on Tuesday.
"I was with Jesus and another person. We were three and there was a table. We met by coincidence with (Beckham and Zidane) and that is all there is to it," Pochettino said when quizzed over the incident.

Football: PSG to make late call on Cavani fitness for Man United tie

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain will make a last-minute decision on the fitness of Edinson Cavani for the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester United, coach Thomas Tuchel said on Tuesday (March 5).
"He has taken a full part in the last two training sessions with us, but we will decide tomorrow (Wednesday) after training," Tuchel said at his eve-of-game press conference.
"We will wait to see how he responds, so there will be a final decision in the morning."
The Uruguayan striker has not played since injuring a tendon in his hip while scoring a penalty during a Ligue 1 game against Bordeaux on Feb 9, just before the first leg against United, which PSG won 2-0.
Neymar remains on the sidelines for the French champions, with the Brazilian not expected back from a metatarsal injury for around a month.

Handsome payouts for Mourinho - three sacks full

Handsome payouts for Mourinho - three sacks full

LONDON • Another three-year cycle has ended with yet another Jose Mourinho sacking and a handsome payout.
The Portuguese manager's reign at Manchester United - despite signing an improved deal to 2020 just 11 months ago - was cut short last Tuesday after the English Premier League football club's worst start to a season in 28 years.
His third firing - twice with Chelsea - was also partly triggered by a much-publicised breakdown in the relationship he had with several United players, notably Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial and Antonio Valencia.
The "Special One" has long had a history of falling out with those under his charge - from Iker Casillas at Real Madrid to Adrian Mutu and Mateja Kezman during his first Chelsea spell, and Juan Mata when he was reappointed.
Mourinho leaves Old Trafford with his reputation as one of football's most divisive characters even more pronounced, but he still remains a tempting proposition for any club willing to eschew aesthetics for short-term success.
However, there is a price to pay for appointing Mourinho as his past teams can attest to - not only the dressing room rifts and trail of bruised egos, but also the huge compensation figures he will command should things not work out.
According to The Daily Mail, United owe him £22.5 million (S$39 million) as the club are still in the running for the Champions League, entitling him to a 25 per cent bonus on top of his basic salary package of £18 million.

The 55-year-old reportedly pocketed £18 million from Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich when he experienced his first dismissal in September 2007 after a series of rows with the Russian, despite leading the club to six trophies in three years at Stamford Bridge.

The LaLiga giants then announced they had reached a "mutual agreement" to end their three-year relationship at the end of the term.

The £9.5m compensation payout that could be awarded to Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in the event of his dismissal would be no deterrent to owner Roman Abramovich, if the club's history with
