Football: China all but confirmed as 2023 Asian Cup hosts after South Korea withdraws

(Reuters) - China was all but confirmed as the host nation of the next Asian Cup tournament in 2023 after the only other bidders South Korea withdrew from the process.
The Korean Football Association (KFA) notified the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) of their intention to withdraw in a letter on Wednesday (May 15), paving the way for China to host the tournament for the second time.
The world's most populous nation last hosted the continental championship in 2004, when they lost the final 3-1 to Japan in Beijing.
"We need to make a choice between the 2023 AFC Asian Cup and the Women's World Cup," KFA secretary general Chun Hanjin said in a statement on the organisation's website.
"We decided to focus on the Women's World Cup strategically.
"In case of the Women's World Cup, Fifa and the government will actively support the joint hosting of the two Koreas."
The KFA in March announced a joint bid with North Korea to host the 2023 Women's World Cup. Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa have also expressed interest.
The AFC are scheduled to announce the 2023 Asian Cup hosts on June 4.
Qatar, the hosts of the next World Cup in 2022, won their first Asian Cup title earlier this year with a 3-1 victory over Japan in the United Arab Emirates.

Football: Tottenham's Vertonghen to see neurologist over head injury

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen will see a neurologist on Thursday (May 2) after suffering a horrific head injury during his side's Champions League semi-final defeat against Ajax.
Vertonghen was dazed and covered in blood following an accidental collision with Tottenham team-mate Toby Alderweireld in the first half on Tuesday.
The Belgium international initially tried to play on after being checked by Tottenham's medical staff, but he still looked groggy and had to be helped off the pitch moments later.
It was feared Vertonghen had suffered a concussion, raising questions about the decision to allow him to briefly resume play.
Vertonghen has shown no ill-effects since and tests so far have been all clear, but Tottenham revealed he will go for an additional examination with the specialist on Thursday.
"Jan Vertonghen has undergone further assessment today (Wednesday 1 May) after sustaining a head injury in last night's Champions League semi-final first leg against Ajax. He also suffered a small cut to his nose that was bleeding heavily," a Tottenham statement said.
"Jan was immediately withdrawn as a result of the player informing medical staff that symptoms were developing suddenly and that he no longer felt stable standing up.

"Tests today have been clear and testing will continue for the next few days.
"Additionally, as is standard club policy with certain injuries, we shall also be seeking independent advice and Jan is due to see a neurologist, who specialises in elite athletes, tomorrow. The player has reported no ill-effects today."
Vertonghen tweeted: "Not the way I wanted the game to go last night. Feeling ok today. Thanks to both sets of fans for the positive messages."

Football: Liverpool's players must fight for the Premier League title with every fibre of their being, says Klopp

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has urged his players to give "every fibre of their bodies" in the battle for the Premier League title.
Manchester City moved to the top of the league on Wednesday (Feb 6) for the first time since December after Klopp's side limped to back-to-back draws against Leicester City and West Ham United.
However, Klopp has dismissed the notion that Liverpool are wilting under the pressure of bidding for their first top division title in 29 years.
"I got a message this week, another sign that people think I need help - I don't need help, I'm fine - but it said in the last 10 games, City dropped 12 points and we dropped seven," Klopp told reporters ahead of Saturday's game against Bournemouth.
"Is it interesting for me? Not really, but obviously the view from outside is completely different.
"The good news is, we are still in there but the only chance to improve is by winning football games. We will be ready with each fibre of our bodies to fight for everything."
Klopp confirmed centre-back Joe Gomez will be out for up to six weeks as he continues to recover from leg surgery, but Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum took part in first-team training this week.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is recovering from a long-term knee injury, was added to the Champions League squad but Klopp played down expectations regarding the return of the England midfielder.
"If we go to the semi-final, I think he is available," Klopp added. "Maybe quarter-final, I am not 100 per cent sure, but he still needs time. Everything looks fine, but now I wait for the green light of the medical department... We are not at that point in the moment."

Solari believes in VAR as Real claim slim win at Ajax
AMSTERDAM • Real Madrid coach Santiago Solari has urged managers to trust in the video assistant referee after his team benefited from a controversial VAR decision at Ajax Amsterdam on Wednesday.
The VAR was used by referee Damir Skomina in the 38th minute to rule out a goal for the first time in the Champions League in the first leg of the last-16 tie which Real won 2-1.
Ajax's Dusan Tadic was shown to be offside on replays and deemed to be interfering with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who spilled a header and allowed Nicolas Tagliafico to head in the rebound.
Said Solari: "We don't have the elements to make a judgment. We don't have a monitor. We (have to) trust what VAR or the referees say.
"We had to do a lot right to get the win - work hard, persevere, create chances, deal with the pressure and score goals."
Karim Benzema scored for Real on the hour before Hakim Ziyech levelled in the 75th minute. Marco Asensio then came off the bench to net the winner.
European football's governing body Uefa later explained that the goal was correctly overturned.
"The referee identified that Tagliafico's teammate Tadic was in an offside position and interfering with the goalkeeper - preventing him from playing or being able to play the ball - as the header was being made," it said on Twitter. "The goal was correctly overturned and a free kick given for offside."
The VAR system, used during last year's World Cup, and now called upon in most of Europe's leading leagues, is making its debut in the continent's top club competition in this season's knockout stages.
Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong suggested that the decision was not justified, saying: "As a team we did well, it was too bad that our goal is rejected. Perhaps something like that is easy to do in favour of the big club."
Meanwhile, Real captain Sergio Ramos has backtracked on his suggestion that he deliberately earned a yellow card to ensure he would be banned for the second leg and, as a result, be available for a possible quarter-final.
"The truth is that given the result I'd be lying if I said it wasn't something I had in mind," the Spaniard said after the game. "Sometimes there is a time to make decisions and I have done so."
Around an hour later, he wrote on Twitter: "I want to make clear that it hurts me more than anyone. I have not forced the card."

Key battles: Chelsea v Man United

DAVID LUIZ V ROMELU LUKAKU

Luiz endured one of his sporadic, spectacularly poor performances against City last week, but he is one of Chelsea's few leaders and is capable of galvanising them.
Lukaku never scored for Chelsea and has lost his place in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first-choice side, but has started both FA Cup games and set up two goals at Arsenal.

N'GOLO KANTE V PAUL POGBA

France's World Cup-winning midfielder Pogba has been a revelation for Solskjaer, despite his red card against Paris Saint-Germain. If he starts on the left of United's midfield trio or diamond, Kante should be positioned to follow his compatriot back.
Chelsea often struggle with the spaces either side of Jorginho when Kante is upfield.

GONZALO HIGUAIN V VICTOR LINDELOF

Higuain is looking for a hat-trick after winning the Italian Cup in 2017 and 2018. He is the lone Chelsea player who should be spared criticism for the 6-0 thrashing at the Etihad, where he came close to scoring.
Lindelof could not cope with Kylian Mbappe's pace on Tuesday. He faces a very different test in the slower, bulkier Higuain.

Football: Brazil soccer star Pele hospitalised in Paris, RMC Sport reports

PARIS (REUTERS) - Brazil soccer great Pele was hospitalised in Paris late on Tuesday (April 2) with a strong fever but his condition is not life-threatening, RMC Sport reported.
The 78-year-old was admitted as a precaution after attending an event in the French capital with France's World Cup winning youngster Kylian Mbappe.
A representative for Pele in Brazil could not immediately be reached for comment.
Pele was still in hospital on Wednesday afternoon, RMC reported, though in a possible sign he was making a recovery, he said on Twitter: "I met Kylian Mbappe and his parents last night in Paris at @Hublot event. We talked goals, World Cups and watches. Great company!"
Earlier, Mbappe had written on social media: "I had the chance this evening to spend a once-in-a-lifetime moment with the living legend @Pele."
Pele, revered by many as soccer's greatest player ever, is alone in winning the World Cup three times, first lifting the trophy aged 17.
The Brazilian was swift to praise Mbappe after he set last year's World Cup in Russia alight with his electric speed and goalscoring.

Mbappe became the youngest player (19) to score two goals in a World Cup game since Pele in 1958.
He also became the first teenager since Pele to score in a World Cup final.
"If Kylian keeps equalling my records like this I may have to dust my boots off again," Pele tweeted at the time.
Mbappe replied: "The King will always remain King."
The Paris St Germain forward told Tuesday's event he would never match the Brazil great's scoring tally during his career.

Pele claims he has scored 1,025 goals.
"Even with the goals in playgrounds, goals on the PlayStation, I could never equal (that)," the 20-year-old said at the sponsors' event.
Mbappe and Pele had been scheduled to meet late last year but had to postpone, again because of Pele's health, French media said.

The inquest into Maurizio Sarri's reign will be ramped up further over the next few days with Chelsea's top-four hopes having suffered a huge blow. That Gonzalo Higuain failed to open his account for his new side on his Premier League debut, only made things worse.

Klopp needs to fire up his midfielders

Klopp needs to fire up his midfielders

Three weeks ago, Georginio Wijnaldum scored a delicate, delightful lob against Bournemouth.
If it was an early contender for Liverpool's Goal of 2019 award, it is the only candidate for one title: it is the only goal their midfielders have scored in this calendar year.
Over the season, the six - Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Adam Lallana, Naby Keita, Fabinho and Wijnaldum - have only eight in all competitions, and three of those were Milner's penalties.
The Manchester City quartet of Kevin de Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva and Bernardo Silva have 25 among them.
Manchester United midielder Paul Pogba, with 14, has almost twice as many goals as the whole Liverpool midfield.
All of which exacerbates the importance of the Reds' front three. When the forwards are firing, it matters not if their supporting cast are drawing blanks.

Yet when Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are subdued, as they were when none recorded a shot on target against United last week, no one else compensates.
Virgil van Dijk's brace against Watford on Wednesday were the defence's first goals of 2019.
Liverpool's midfielders have a combination of attributes, with one notable exception: goalscoring.
The indispensable Wijnaldum was more potent for Newcastle and PSV Eindhoven. Now he does everything except find the net regularly.
Fabinho has excelled after a slow start. Milner began the season well. Henderson, as his man-of-the-match display against Bayern Munich indicates, is under-rated.
Only the injury-hit Lallana and Keita feel like disappointments, but even then, the summer signing has shown more promise of late.
While Xherdan Shaqiri had an excellent autumn, he was really a forward - Liverpool have never really replaced Philippe Coutinho, who contributed 12 goals in his final half-season alone.
The Brazilian's capacity to produce something from nothing, often with long-range shots, added another dimension and would have been useful on the days when the forward three were blunted.
Coutinho was disproportionately prolific in bigger games, too, and it is no coincidence that he scored three times against Everton.
Last summer, Liverpool almost signed Nabil Fekir to be the most attacking of the three midfielders. The move broke down and the Frenchman instead has 11 goals for Lyon this season.
Liverpool may have hoped for a similar impact from Keita, whose explosiveness helped him register eight for RB Leipzig last season.
Instead, as they look for end-of-season impetus, it may come from a 2017 arrival.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in training. He will not feature yet but, if he can recapture the form he showed 12 months ago, including two fine goals against City, he might help render the midfield less barren.
Because, while Jurgen Klopp's workhorses form the supply line to Salah and company, they also leave them with too much of the responsibility for finishing.
