Healthy Hazard is the key to Chelsea's success: Zola

Healthy Hazard is the key to Chelsea's success: Zola

LONDON • Chelsea must have hoped they could advance to the League Cup semi-finals without having to call upon Eden Hazard, granting his battered and bruised ankles a rest, but currently everything they do seems dependent upon their brilliant Belgian.
Blues assistant coach Gianfranco Zola was so impressed with the forward - who scored in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Wednesday - that he said that the 27-year-old can make a difference "even if he plays just 20 minutes".
Chelsea had buzzed round the Bournemouth goal for much of the game but it was not until substitute Hazard came on with half an hour to go that they looked creative and decisive enough to break through.
"The difference was the changes that we made," Zola told reporters at the post-match conference in place of manager Maurizio Sarri.
"Of course we have a lot of games and players like Eden (Hazard) we need to keep fit. He can make a big difference.
"He is certainly one of the players who have given us a lot of satisfaction. Hopefully he will stay and achieve great things in the future."
An 84th-minute Hazard goal, which spun into the net after a deflection, earned Chelsea a place in the semi-finals, where they will face London rivals Tottenham.
Another player who caught Zola's eye was England midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
"I was impressed with him. He has done well as a wide player, but he showed a lot of sacrifice as a midfielder," Zola said.
"He was getting tired but was disciplined... He is a good boy and works very hard."
It was the first home game since alleged racist taunts against Manchester City's Raheem Sterling prompted an outcry and Chelsea banned four fans.
Chairman Bruce Buck took a page in the programme notes to condemn racism and the atmosphere in the ground was lively but appeared good humoured, with no added security in evidence.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has played down the prospect of in-form striker Callum Wilson leaving the club during the January transfer window, amid reported interest from Chelsea.
The 26-year-old has scored eight goals in 16 league appearances this season and also made his England debut last month.
"Callum's our player and very, very focused on us. I think you could see that with his performance," Howe said.
When asked whether there was any scenario in which Wilson could be sold in January, the manager replied: "Not from my perspective, no."

Football: Qatar coach hailed as 'our Guardiola' after stunning Asian Cup win

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Qatar coach Felix Sanchez shrugged off comparisons to Pep Guardiola on Friday (Feb 1) after masterminding a breathtaking Asian Cup victory just three years before the 2022 World Cup on home turf.
Almoez Ali scored a tournament-record nine goals and the Maroons conceded only once as they swept to the first continental title in their history, beating Japan 3-1 in the final.
Ali said he saw shades of Manchester City's Guardiola in Sanchez, who coached Barcelona's youth players before joining Qatar's national academy in 2006 and working his way through the ranks.
"I've been working with him for nine years, he's highly intelligent," said the 21-year-old striker.
"I compare him to Guardiola because he has the same ideas."
But Sanchez told AFP that Ali only made the comment "because I'm there (listening) and he wants to keep playing".
"I've worked with Almoez for a very long time and we have good relationship," the Spaniard said.
"He's very easy to coach because he's a hard worker and he deserves everything that has happened to him in this tournament."

Qatar upset former champions Saudi Arabia, Iraq and South Korea on their march to the final, but those weren't the only challenges they faced.
The Qataris were pelted with shoes and plastic bottles by a hostile home crowd as they beat the United Arab Emirates 4-0 in the semi-finals.
The UAE then lodged a protest over the eligibility of Ali and defender Bassam Al-Rawi which was dismissed just hours before the final.
Sanchez insisted he had "no concerns" about the eligibility row and also dismissed speculation that notoriously trigger-happy Qatar might replace him with a big-name coach before the World Cup.
"I'm very proud to be the Qatar national team coach. Today we made history. I'm only thinking about today. It's a great day for me and the players and the country," Sanchez said.
"There's always news about this person and that person but we're focused on our work and we have the full support of the QFA.
"So no concerns about the World Cup, it's in 2022 and you don't even know what's going to happen in two weeks."

Football: Cardiff hope for a 'happy ending' in Emiliano Sala disappearance

LONDON • Cardiff City players have yet to come to terms with the disappearance of £15 million (S$26.7 million) club-record signing Emiliano Sala, a week after the striker's plane went missing over the English Channel.
Despite the Argentinian never getting the opportunity to make his debut for the Premier League club - he had been pencilled in to start at Arsenal today - the 28-year-old is still considered "part of the team" and defender Sol Bamba told Sky Sports the squad had been "hurt and affected by it (the tragedy)".
He said: "If you're human, you're going to be hurt by it. If you've got a heart, you're going to be affected.
"Even if he wasn't fully part of us, from the minute he signed for us and came to see the boys to say hello, he was part of us.
"We have to hope because we haven't found his body yet, even if the chances are very slim, but we like to think there can be a happy ending, hopefully. It was a tough week... Everyone was in shock."
While conceding the awful circumstances were far from ideal preparations for their trip to the Emirates, with last Tuesday's training session called off, the Ivorian claimed the team "were going to do the best we can".
Cardiff manager Neil Warnock echoed the same thoughts of finding Sala alive, even though a minute's silence will be held before all league games this week in honour of the player and David Ibbotson, the plane's pilot.
The Bluebirds boss admitted at his pre-match press conference that it had been "the most difficult week in my career by a mile" but said "the players need some sort of distraction".
He added: "I can't get my head around the situation, when I look at (Sala's sister) Romina and the family. Everybody is hoping (to find Sala) like the family.
"I've met the lad and know how he was looking forward to this (playing in England). I've never experienced anything like it... It's been a sombre mood. It's just as well we have a game tomorrow."
Arsenal manager Unai Emery will also be wary of the "knock-on (effect) with the (Cardiff) players", even though Warnock will again be forced to field Callum Paterson, a converted right-back, up front.
The Gunners have conceded 32 league goals this term, and their backline will be tested after captain Laurent Koscielny and Sokratis Papastathopoulos joined Rob Holding and Hector Bellerin - both already ruled out for the season - on the injury list.
Although there were some positive news with Emery confirming Koscielny did not break his jaw and Sokratis was likely to be out for "maybe two or three weeks", Arsenal have only two fit centre-backs at the moment in Shkodran Mustafi and rookie Konstantinos Mavropanos for their "very important match against Cardiff".

New head of coach education for FAS

New head of coach education for FAS
Former national cerebral palsy football team head coach Zainudeen Hassan, 50, has been appointed the new head of coach education and development of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), it was announced yesterday.
He replaces Basir Ellaya Kutty, who left the post in June last year.
Zainudeen's responsibilities include working closely with coaches from Singapore Premier League (SPL) clubs and their centre of excellence youth programmes, as well as implementing the FAS coach education syllabus.
"Coach education and development is an important part of football," he said in a statement.
"Not only does it ensure that our coaches are kept updated with the ever-changing game of football, it also aligns them in achieving the desired outcomes of our football development plans."
A former coach at the now-defunct Milo Soccer School, Zainudeen was also head of youth development for SPL club Balestier Khalsa from 2000 to 2009. He also guided the cerebral palsy team to a silver at the 2014 Asean Para Games and a bronze at the 2015 Games.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "Zainudeen has been actively involved in Singapore football and has a good understanding of regional football and its trends, through his roles in the AFC and the Asean Football Federation.
"Coach education and development is a key part of FAS' strategic plan and, with Zainudeen's experience and understanding of the local and regional football coaching systems, we believe he would be able to further guide and support our coaches."
