Football: Chelsea collapse to 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth

BOURNEMOUTH, England (REUTERS) - Chelsea collapsed to a humiliating 4-0 defeat at Bournemouth to put a dent in their top-four hopes on Wednesday (Jan 30) - all the goals coming in the second half.
The visitors controlled the first half but were picked off after the break with Joshua King on target twice for Eddie Howe's mid-table side, with David Brooks and Charlie Daniels completing the rout.
For all their possession the closest Chelsea came to scoring in the opening period was Mateo Kovacic's header which was touched onto the bar by Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc.
Bournemouth were a threat on the break with Brooks and Junior Stanislas were both denied by Spanish keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Chelsea fell behind two minutes after the break when Brooks's astute reverse pass released King to fire high past Arrizabalaga and things went from bad to worse as King's pass over the top left released Brooks who stepped inside David Luiz's half-hearted tackle and fired home.
Stanislas set up King for his second after a flowing move and Daniels rubbed salt in Chelsea's wounds, his stoppage-time goal meaning they drop below Arsenal into fifth on goals scored.

Football: Real Madrid beat Ajax in Champions League last 16, first leg

AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Real Madrid needed a late winner from Marco Asensio and VAR's debut in the Champions League to beat a spirited Ajax 2-1 in the first leg of the last 16 on Wednesday (Feb 13).
Ajax have not beaten Madrid in 24 years and thought they were on their way at the Johan Cruyff Arena when Nicolas Tagliafico headed home after a Thibaut Courtois error.
But referee Damir Skomina judged Dusan Tadic to be offside upon review and Madrid showed no pity on their youthful opponents, Karim Benzema and Asensio scoring two precious away goals in the second half.
Hakim Ziyech's equaliser at least keeps Ajax in touch heading into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu but Asensio's 87th-minute winner was a sucker-punch in a match the Dutch team had largely dominated.
Their ruled out opener will likely only add to the sense of what might have been and it was no surprise to see a cluster of red and white shirts surrounding the officials at the final whistle.
VAR has been introduced to the Champions League for the first time in this year's knock-out stages and leaflets were distributed to the media before kick-off, one of the points explaining that reviews should only be made for "clear and obvious mistakes".
Tadic's intervention on Courtois was minimal and even if he was just offside, it seemed generous to judge he had made enough of an impact on the goalkeeper to be penalised.
Still, there was more than an hour to play and Ajax were twice too easily undone on the counter-attack. Frenkie de Jong, who will join Barcelona in the summer, and Matthijs de Ligt, who could follow him, were each dealt a harsh lesson in the ruthlessness of top European football.
Gareth Bale was reinstated to the Madrid starting line-up but there was no place for Marcelo, who missed his first Champions League knock-out game in four years.

TADIC HITS POST

Ajax fans had put on an impressive display of fireworks late on Tuesday night outside the Spanish team's hotel and perhaps it paid off because Madrid were run ragged in the first half.
Courtois skewed an early clearance, Casemiro miscontrolled and Bale swung a frustrated kick at De Jong's shin.
Tadic had the first chance as Sergio Reguilon's poor pass was headed into his path, a sliced finish beating Courtois' right hand but not the post.
The best opportunity fell to the excellent Donny van de Beek, after the ball was shifted along the line like a rugby move until the midfielder was left spare six yards out. Courtois saved with his legs.
Hero one minute, villain the next, Courtois then fumbled De Ligt's header from the corner and Tagliafico headed in. There was no protest from Courtois but Skomina pointed to his earpiece. Tadic had brushed past Courtois as the header looped in and was deemed offside.
The crowd jeered at half-time and Benzema compounded their misery soon after. It was a goal to sum up Madrid's resurgence in recent weeks as Luka Modric flicked a ball for Vinicius Junior to race after. He tore past one, jinked inside two more and teed up Benzema, who found the top corner.
Ajax refused to fade. David Neres and Tadic both went close before Neres skipped free down the left and crossed for Ziyech to slide in the equaliser. Madrid wanted a free-kick for a foul on Lucas Vazquez in the build-up but this time the goal stood.
A draw might have appeased the home fans but they were denied even that as a slick move through midfield freed Dani Carvajal down the right. His cross found Asensio, who could not miss.

Football: Burnley boost survival hopes with 2-0 win over Wolves

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Burnley moved five points clear of the Premier League's relegation zone after an early Conor Coady own goal and a late Dwight McNeil strike gave them a 2-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday (March 30).
The result left Burnley 17th on 33 points from 32 games, five more than 18th-placed Cardiff City who have two games in hand and host sixth-placed Chelsea on Sunday.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche praised McNeil and was also upbeat about his team's chances of staying in the top flight.
"Dwight has got real quality and he has shown that again with a goal and an assist," Dyche told the BBC.
"He is 19 and delivering in the Premier League. He's certainly laid down a marker. He will be aware of some of the basics he still has to learn but I'm enjoying what he is doing.
"We have got 21 points since Christmas - that's a healthy return. That should leave us in good confidence."
Asked if Wolves had next week's FA Cup semi-final with Watford was on their minds, Coady said: "No, not at all. It's a good game coming up but we're not thinking about it.
"We have it all to play for in the Premier League. We want to finish as high as we can."
Wolves stayed seventh on 44 points from 31 games. They are ahead of Leicester City, who have played a game more, on goal difference.
Coady netted his third own-goal of the season in the second minute when he slid goalwards in an attempt to block Chris Wood's shot which struck the post and rebounded into the back of the net off the Wolves captain.
The visitors had a penalty appeal waved away by referee Christopher Kavanagh midway through the first half after Jonny Castro's shot struck Burnley striker Ashley Barnes in the arm.
Ivan Cavaleiro squandered a gilt-edged chance to equalise shortly after the break, blazing his shot over the bar after good work by Leander Dendoncker on the right flank.
That miss was punished in the 77th minute, when livewire McNeil picked his spot inside the penalty area and drove a fine shot into the bottom right corner of the net to seal Burnley's victory.

'He's a super-hero': Tearful Pochettino salutes hat-trick hero Lucas

AMSTERDAM (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino wept tears of joy as the emotional Tottenham manager hailed "super-hero" Lucas Moura for the incredible hat-trick that fired Tottenham into their first Champions League final.
Tottenham enjoyed arguably the greatest night in their history as Lucas's second-half treble clinched a 3-2 semi-final second-leg win that sent Pochettino's side through on away goals.
With just seconds left at the Johan Cruyff Arena, Tottenham were heading out of the tournament, but Brazilian forward Lucas came to the rescue with a superb strike from the edge of the area.
It was all too much for Pochettino, who danced with delight before burying his head in the turf as he let his emotions run wild.
When the final whistle went, Pochettino sobbed uncontrollably and he was still misty-eyed when he spoke to the media.
"It's still difficult to talk. The emotion is amazing, thank you to football. My players are heroes - in the last year I was telling everyone this group are heroes," Pochettino told BT Sport.
"They are all heroes but Lucas was a super-hero. Unbelievable hat-trick. He deserves it, he is a great guy.

"The second half they were amazing. Thank you football! This type of emotion without football is not possible."
Tottenham were written off in some quarters before the match after losing the first leg at home 1-0, a match that Ajax dominated for long periods.
And Pochettino took a subtle swipe at the doubters when he said: "Thank you to everyone who has believed in us. To describe this in words is difficult.
"We were talking before the game that when you work and when you feel the love it's not stress, it's passion of the team.
"We showed we love the sport and football. Today was amazing. It was a joy to watch this kind of game.
"It's difficult to compete at this level. I am so grateful to be a coach. To be in football and to live this type of football."
Welling up with emotion, Pochettino was crying again towards the end of the interview as he dedicated the astonishing triumph to his family.
"To have the chance to play a final is amazing. I want to remember my family, it is for them too. For the people who support us in that moment, it is amazing to reward them," he said as the tears flowed once more.
"I think everyone deserves it in this club, with all the tough times we've had in the five years that we have been here."

Football: Harry Kane cameo is 'respect' for paying home fans

LONDON • While the introduction of Harry Kane could be seen as unnecessary given that Tottenham were six goals up in their 7-0 FA Cup win, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino suggested he did so to be fair to the Tranmere Rovers home supporters who had turned up on a cold night.
A hat-trick from Fernando Llorente, two goals from Serge Aurier, and a strike each from Kane and Son Heung-min saw Tottenham comfortably through to the fourth round of the competition.
The League Two side managed to live with their illustrious Premier League opponents for most of the first half but were outclassed after the interval.
Kane came on in the 75th minute and added a seventh goal just seven minutes later. He took his tally for the season to 19 and brought Spurs a 33rd goal in 33 days, as well as their biggest away win ever in the FA Cup.
"It was the plan to give Harry Kane 15-20 minutes to play, he always wants to play. It is important too for the fans here and the opponents to enjoy Harry Kane, he's an icon in England and not everyone can have the opportunity to see him," Pochettino said.
"It was important to show some respect to the people who are here, it was very nice for everyone.
"Some of the people who paid money to see the game probably did so in the hope they might see Harry Kane in action."
Tottenham have not won the FA Cup since 1991 and silverware has also been in short supply since, with the League Cup victory in 2008 their most recent trophy.
Following the win, Spurs will welcome Chelsea to Wembley in the first leg of the League Cup semi-finals on Tuesday and Pochettino was happy that the victory will keep their momentum going.
"It was a very professional performance. I'm very pleased," he said. "I'm happy because we kept our level and we keep going in the competition."
Tranmere manager Micky Mellon acknowledged his team, who won promotion to League Two from the fifth-tier National League last term, were outclassed by a side who are third in the top flight.
"They are a fantastic football team with outrageously good players," he said. "Sometimes you have to put your hands up and say they were brilliant."
