Football: Pochettino says energised Spurs ready for Dortmund test

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino says Tottenham have shaken off the fatigue from their gruelling schedule as they prepare to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last 16 on Wednesday.
Pochettino was frustrated that Tottenham had to play their Premier League match against Leicester on Sunday, while Dortmund were in action 24 hours earlier against Hoffenheim.
The Tottenham boss claimed over the weekend that the extra day of rest for the Bundesliga leaders could put his team at a "massive disadvantage" in the first leg at Wembley.
Adding to Pochettino's frustration, Dortmund have also benefited from a refreshing winter break, while Tottenham have been damaged by injuries to Harry Kane and Dele Alli following the draining Christmas and New Year programme.
But, aware of the dangers of giving his players a ready-made excuse for under-performing, Pochettino was keen to accentuate the positive.
"I've described before, or in the last few days, that it was a little bit unfair (the schedule)," Pochettino told reporters on Tuesday (Feb 12).
"But that is not an excuse (not) to arrive tomorrow in our best condition and fight to try to win. I think you can feel in the eyes of the players the energy."
Tottenham beat Dortmund twice in the Champions League group stage last season but they will face more formidable opponents this time.
Dortmund sit on top of the Bundesliga with a vibrant squad including young England forward Jadon Sancho.
Pochettino is well aware of the threat posed by the Germans as he tries to lead Tottenham into the quarter-finals of a European competition for the first time in his five-year reign.
But, despite the absence of Kane and Alli, they have reeled off four successive wins to stay in the Premier League title race.
And Pochettino expects his side to rise to the occasion in the same never-say-die style they displayed in the group stage this term.

ENERGY AND MOTIVATION

It took late goals against PSV Eindhoven, Inter Milan and Barcelona for Tottenham to make the last 16 by the skin of their teeth.
"We were talking in the meeting before and it's completely different (in big games)," Pochettino said.
"If you ask me why, I don't know, because I'm a person whose own motivation is always high, when we play against Dortmund or Barcelona or we play against different (teams) in different competitions.
"But of course you can feel that it's the Champions League, that it's going to be a massive game with, I hope, a full stadium at Wembley and of course the energy and motivation is going to be there."
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has already seized on Pochettino's upbeat message.
Recalling Tottenham's group-stage win over Real Madrid last season, Vertonghen says the north Londoners have no reason to fear any team in Europe if they play at their best.
"We can beat anyone. We have shown that last year. Over two games we were the better team against Real Madrid, who were the eventual winners of the trophy," he said.
There was frustration for Tottenham at this stage of the Champions League last season when they conceded two second-half goals to crash out against Juventus after they had looked to have the tie in their control.
That painful memory will motivate Vertonghen and company against Dortmund.
"That is why it was a shame we could not do better last year because we felt we should have done better," he said.
"That is why everyone has the feeling we can do it this year."

However, unlike Manchester United, who ended the season as close to the relegation zone as they were to City, 32 points behind the champions in sixth, City have invested their money wisely.

Football: Klopp excited by Premier League title fight

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists the Premier League title race is something to get excited about rather than stressed about despite seeing his side overhauled by Manchester City in the past week.
City climbed to the top of the table on goal difference with victory against Everton in midweek but Liverpool's destiny remains in their own hands as they have a game in hand over Pep Guardiola's men, with both sides level on 62 points.
"It's getting exciting now," said Klopp on Friday (Feb 8).
"There was never a doubt that would happen. That was always clear. I don't think that anybody thought we would be top of the league with 12 points between us and another team with three games to go.
"The only chance to improve our position, even though it is a good position, is by winning football games."
Just over a week ago, Liverpool had the chance to move seven points clear at the top, but back-to-back draws with Leicester and West Ham on Monday have seen them reeled in by the champions.
Liverpool players and fans have been accused of letting nerves get to them in their desperation to end a 29-year wait to win the title.

And Klopp called on the home fans to make Anfield a cauldron when Bournemouth visit on Saturday.
"It's like shouting your soul on the pitch. That's how we say it in German," added Klopp.
"I know that with each fibre of our bodies we will be ready to fight for everything.
"The only thing I want to say after the season is we gave our everything."
There was good news for Liverpool off the field on Friday as the club announced a world-record £106 million (S$140 million) net profit last year thanks to the sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and a run to the Champions League final.
Much of that profit has already been reinvested in the signings of Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri, and Klopp is hoping he does not need to ask for a lot more money this summer.
"We built a really strong squad and that's a squad built for the future, not only this season," added the German.
"I hope we don't need too much money in the next years to be honest because if you have the right players in, you work with them and make the best of it."
Klopp's squad has been ravaged by injury and illness in recent weeks but he could have Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum back for Bournemouth's visit after all three returned to training on Thursday.

S'pore coaches work wonders

S'pore coaches work wonders

From relegation candidates to I-League champions in a year, Chennai City proved there are more to football miracles than just Leicester City's stunning English Premier League triumph in 2016.
In achieving the improbable, head coach Akbar Nawas and his assistant K. Balagumaran also showed that Singaporean trainers are capable of producing such magical moments after leading the Indian club to the league title on Saturday.
The duo are believed to be the first local coaches to win a professional football league outside South-east Asia.
Former Tampines Rovers coach Akbar told The Straits Times yesterday: "There is great satisfaction after accepting the challenge of taking over a relegation-threatened team, and then winning the league within a year."
When the 43-year-old took over the reins last year, Chennai had three games to stave off relegation from the I-League. They beat Churchill Brothers 3-1, lost 7-1 to East Bengal, before securing safety with a 2-1 win over Minerva Punjab in their final match.
A year later, the remarkable turnaround was completed in front of 8,000 fans at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu on Saturday with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Minerva as both club and head coach clinched their first league title.
For Balagumaran, this is his second league title as assistant to V. Sundram Moorthy after winning the 2013 Malaysian Super League title with the LionsXII.
True heroes as Chennai City players celebrate their maiden league title win.

A SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT
There is great satisfaction after accepting the challenge of taking over a relegation-threatened team, and then winning the league within a year.
AKBAR NAWAS, Chennai City head coach, on the I-League side's dream season.

With 13 wins, four draws and three defeats, Chennai amassed 43 points, one more than second-placed East Bengal. And they did it in style, scoring 48 goals in 20 matches, and never relinquishing their place at the top of the 11-team league from the third match week.
The Times of India summarised their triumph as "befitting their dominant campaign, the fulcrum of which was a sustained possession-based football".
Akbar said: "Winning the title was the end result of good scouting, our attacking football philosophy, how we trained, prepared and executed our plans during the games.
"The club gave me the freedom to impart this to the players despite initial scepticism about whether this will be successful in India.
"I never lost sleep over the title race because we were focused and trusted our processes - there was great synergy among the owner, backroom staff and players. In fact, I lost sleep only after we won, with the many phone calls and text messages coming in!"
Astutely building the team around five Spaniards from Europe's lower leagues and former S-League star Jozef Kaplan, Akbar also made room for local talents to shine.

PUTTING THE SHINE ON
When we got here, the players we had were not from football academies, they were from the streets and so unpolished... now they have won their first professional league title.
K. BALAGUMARAN, on the humble backgrounds of many of their players.

Incredibly, Chennai won the league without a single Indian international in their squad. Yet, the goals flowed from every department. Striker Pedro Manzi may be the league's joint-top scorer with 21 goals, but the winning goals against Minerva came from 20-year-old centre-back Gaurav Bora.
Balagumaran said: "When we got here, the players we had were not from football academies, they were from the streets and so unpolished.
"Many of them are playing in their first professional season and now they have won their first professional league title.
"Credit has to go to Akbar for his attacking philosophy because defending was not our strength - we drew 3-3 with Neroca after blowing a 3-0 lead - and to the players for being open to his ideas.
"This is definitely the highlight of my career, but I hope there is more to come."
That could well be the case as Chennai are now eligible for the 2020 AFC Champions League qualifiers, while sources also told ST that the duo are now on the All India Football Federation's radar, with India's national coach position currently vacant.
Representatives from Swiss club FC Basel, who have a 26 per cent equity stake in the Indian club, were at Chennai's coronation and are said to be impressed by the work of Akbar and Balagumaran.
While Akbar declined to comment on speculation over his future as he has one more year left on his contract, Balagumaran said: "I hope this achievement shows there are good coaches from Singapore and opens the door for more Singaporean coaches to venture abroad.
"If we can start from humble beginnings, work hard with what we have and still find success, there is no reason local coaches can't aim for a job in a professional league in Asia, or perhaps youth teams in Europe."

Football: Arsenal's top-four hopes dented by defeat at Wolves

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Arsenal's fragility on the road returned as a 3-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday (April 24) put a huge dent in their hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League.
Unai Emery's side needed only a point to reclaim fourth spot from Chelsea but conceded three times before the break against a clinical Wolves side who moved up to seventh.
Ruben Neves opened the scoring with a superb 28th minute free kick before Matt Doherty's glancing header made it 2-0 nine minutes later.
Dreadful Arsenal defending allowed Diogo Jota to surge through and fire a shot past Bernd Leno on the stroke of halftime.
A late Sokratis Papastathopoulos header from Granit Xhaka's cross was scant consolation for the Gunners fans who watched their side lose a seventh away league game this season.
With three games left Arsenal remain in fifth place with 66 points, a point behind Chelsea and four behind third-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Manchester United are sixth with 64.
Wolves rose to seventh spot with 51 points - a position that could offer a route into European football next season - and are set to become the first promoted club to finish in the top eight since Reading in 2006-07.
Arsenal have now lost two matches in a row following Sunday's home defeat by Crystal Palace and they may need the backup option of winning the Europa League to claim a place in next season's Champions League.
Emery remained confident they can finish in the top four.
"We can be frustrated but the Premier League is about being consistent over 38 matches," the Spaniard said.
"Today, we're disappointed but we need to remember how we were three months ago.
"We can be optimistic and recover for the top four."
Arsenal dominated possession in the first 20 minutes but Joao Moutinho served notice of Wolves' threat as he curled wide after a flowing counter-attack.
Nacho Monreal was then penalised for a foul on Jota and Neves sent his curling free kick past Leno.
Arsenal switched off at a corner in the 37th minute, allowing Moutinho and Jonny to exchange passes before the latter's cross was glanced by Doherty past a flailing Leno.
In first-half stoppage time Arsenal carelessly conceded possession and Jota's angled shot beat Leno.
Arsenal did tighten up after the break but the damage had already been done.
Incredibly Wolves have now picked up 16 points in their matches against the current top six this season with wins over Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester United and now Arsenal.

Football: Zainudeen Hassan appointed FAS head of coach education and development

SINGAPORE - Former national cerebral palsy football team head coach Zainudeen Hassan has been appointed the new head of coach education and development of the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), the association announced on Friday (March 5).
The 50-year-old replaces Basir Ellaya Kutty, who left the post in June last year.
Zainudeen's key responsibilities include working closely with coaches from Singapore Premier League (SPL) clubs and their centre of excellence programmes, as well as implementing the FAS coach education syllabus.
"Coach education and development is an important part of football," he said in a media statement.
"Not only does it ensure that our coaches are kept updated with the ever-changing game of football, it also aligns them in achieving the desired outcomes of our football development plans.
"Part of coach education also includes imparting and inculcating key values - respect, teamwork and passion.
"I am happy to be given this opportunity to contribute to local football in another capacity and am confident that, together with the team in FAS, we can achieve our vision and objectives for Singapore football."
A former coach at the now-defunct Milo Soccer School, Zainudeen was also head of youth development for SPL club Balestier Khalsa from 2000 to 2009.
He is best known to local football fans for guiding the national CP team to a silver medal at the 2014 Asean Para Games and a bronze at the 2015 Asean Para Games.
FAS general secretary Yazeen Buhari said: "Zainudeen has been actively involved in Singapore football and has a good understanding of regional football and its trends, through his roles in the AFC and the Asean Football Federation.
"Coach education and development is a key part of FAS' strategic plan, and with Zainudeen's experience and understanding of the local and regional football coaching system, we believe that he would be able to further guide and support our coaches."
