Football: Wolves' unhappy new year sees 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS)- Wolverhampton Wanderers saw their impressive Premier League campaign run into the buffers as two goals in the dying minutes enabled Crystal Palace to take all three points with a 2-0 win at Molineux on Wednesday (Jan 2).
Looking out of sorts at the start of the year, Nuno Espirito Santo's Wolves had only needed a draw to become the the first promoted team to garner 30 points after 21 matches in a top flight season since Birmingham City in 2009-10.
Instead, their hopes of rising as high as seventh were spoiled as Palace deservedly took the spoils with Ghanaian international Jordan Ayew firing home his first goal for the club in the 83rd minute.
Luka Milivojevic then converted from the penalty spot, five minutes into added time, after Ryan Bennett had brought down Wilfried Zaha.
It gave Palace consecutive away wins in the same Premier League season for the first time in two years and Roy Hodgson's team were well worth the points.
They dominated the first half, with only their profligate finishing letting them down - with Andros Townsend's dismal ballooned right-footed shot and James Tomkins' missed header proving the most glaring examples.
Wolves, as befits their reputation this term as second-half revivalists, looked much sharper on the resumption, creating more chances in the opening four minutes after the break than in the entire first-half.

Football: Chelsea beat Slavia Prague to reach Europa League semi-finals

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea were given a fright by Slavia Prague in a 4-3 home win on Thursday (April 18) that saw them to a 5-3 aggregate victory and a place in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
Already 1-0 up from the first leg, Chelsea were cruising when they scored three more goals in the first 17 minutes at Stamford Bridge courtesy of Pedro, an own-goal by Simon Deli and Olivier Giroud and were 4-1 ahead on the night at half-time.
But having been facing a rout, the Czech visitors restored their pride with two early second-half goals from Petr Sevcik as they threatened a remarkable comeback.
Chelsea, however, held on and the London club will face Eintracht Frankfurt for a place in the final after the German side beat Benfica 2-0 to go through on away goals after the tie ended level at 4-4 after two legs.
Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri made five changes from the team beaten 2-0 by Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday and put Eden Hazard on the wing with Olivier Giroud the Blues' central striker.
The Londoners doubled their aggregate lead just five minutes into the second leg of this quarter-final tie thanks to Pedro's neat finish after a one-two with Giroud.
Minutes later, Chelsea had another goal.
Pedro produced a contender for miss of the season when presented with a tap-in from close range that came back off the post only for the ball to fly into the face of Slavia defender Simon Deli and rebound into the net for a bizarre own-goal.
Pedro then turned provider, squaring for Giroud to score his 10th Europa League goal of the season.
Chelsea were cruising at 3-0 ahead on aggregate and it seemed Tomas Soucek had done no more than score a consolation goal when he rose unmarked to head in from a corner.
Chelsea though were soon three goals ahead again when Pedro bundled the ball in.
But Slavia rallied impressively after the interval, with Sevcik's 20-yard shot beating Kepa Arrizabalaga at the Chelsea goalkeeper's near post.
And soon afterwards, in the 55th minute, Sevcik produced an even better effort from similar range that flew into the top corner to give Slavia hope of a remarkable recovery.
But that was as good as it got for the visitors, with Sevcik scuffing a shot that might have seen him complete what would have been an astonishing hat-trick.

Football: Don't leave Man United alive in the tie, Pique warns Barca

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has urged his side to make sure they do not leave Manchester United room for another heroic comeback in the Champions League when they visit Old Trafford in Wednesday's eagerly-awaited quarter-final first leg.
United made history in the last-16 by overturning a 2-0 home defeat against Paris St Germain to win the tie on away goals with a dramatic 3-1 victory in the French capital, underlining the club's reputation for stirring European revivals.
"The PSG game should serve as an example for us that you cannot afford to leave Manchester United alive, if you can beat them with lots of goals then you have to do it," Pique told a news conference on Tuesday (April 9).
"In the first leg, PSG were the better side, they scored two goals and they could have scored more. United have a great history, in the second leg they played with lots of young lads from their academy and they still qualified.
"That game should remind us that we have to be very concentrated, as United are a very dangerous team."
Pique, 32, spent his first years as a professional with United, joining the club aged 17 but returning to Barca in 2008 after failing to hold down a place in the team due to fierce competition from Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
Pique has turned into one of Barcelona's best ever defenders in his 11 years back at his boyhood club and is on course to win an eighth La Liga title with the Catalans, who are also in the Copa del Rey final and have the treble within their sights.
But he said his experience at United was invaluable to his development.
"I went from being kid to an adult here, I had my first experiences as a professional and some crazy experiences off the pitch. I came here alone, without my family, I learned a lot and I left a completely different person," he recalled.
Pique also said United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer helped him through difficult times in Manchester when they were team mates, and he praised the former Norway forward for reviving the club's fortunes since succeeding Jose Mourinho in December.
"I remember Ole as a great team mate, I was 17 and he was a veteran and for sure he helped me adapt to the club, to the country and to the city," Pique added.
"It was a great experience to train alongside him, he helped me a lot so I'm happy to see him in charge of Manchester United. He's done a great job, won lots of games and got them playing much better. Tomorrow will be tough and I hope we can win."

David Beckham celebrating after scoring the fifth goal in a 5-0 win over Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Sunday to mark the 20th anniversary of Manchester United’s famous treble in 1999.
The 44-year-old rolled back the years as he left a baffled Bayern defender on the floor with some neat footwork before smashing the ball into the roof of the net to the delight of a crowd in excess of 60,000.
Twenty years after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conjured up the last-gasp winner against Bayern in the 1999 Champions League final, the current United boss scored again against the German side that included Lothar Matthaus, Stefan Effenberg, Sammy Kuffour and Carsten Jancker from the 1999 starting line-up.
Dwight Yorke, Nicky Butt and Louis Saha also found the net as the charity match raised £1.5 million (S$2.62 million) for the Manchester United Foundation. Beckham took to Instagram to express his delight in seeing Alex Ferguson back at Old Trafford as manager for the day.
It was the first time Ferguson, 77, had been in a dugout since undergoing major surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage last May.
“Emotional to see the Boss back and to be on the same field with the players that we made history with… Incredible feeling,” Beckham wrote.
Ferguson was also happy to be back in action, telling BT Sport: “Making the effort to get here was the main thing. I had 27 years here, I can’t forget that. I think the impressive thing for me is they’ve all turned up. Some of them are in great condition, some are not, but they still came.”

Football: Battling Brighton secure vital draw at Wolves

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Brighton & Hove Albion rode their luck to secure a scoreless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday (April 20), gaining a vital point in their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
With four games left, Brighton remained fourth-bottom of the table on 34 points, three ahead of Cardiff City who host Liverpool on Sunday.
On a run of four straight league defeats with no goals scored, Brighton were desperate to get something out of the game and they backed off from the start, packing their defence and showing little ambition in attack.
Wolves dominated possession throughout and striker Diogo Jota had a strong penalty claim turned down before firing a shot just wide and sending a looping effort bouncing off the top of the crossbar.
Wolves created plenty of chances but they struggled to get shots on target and Mat Ryan was left relatively untroubled in the Brighton goal until late in the second half.
With about 15 minutes remaining Jota struck a post and Ryan had to make a superb save to prevent Leander Dendoncker from slamming home the rebound as Brighton hung on grimly for the draw.
"(I'm) very satisfied today, I thought we defended well. My fear was they might get a scrappy one, we had no choice but to allow all the crosses, but we defended very well, the whole team," Brighton manager Chris Hughton told the BBC.
"If we carry on doing what we did today, we'll give ourselves a chance," he added.
Ryan underlined the importance of the result.
"It means a lot in the context of things, it almost feels like three points. We have a superior goal difference to Cardiff, I think that could make the difference," Ryan said.
