Football: Everton set target of winning EPL title within next decade

LONDON (AFP) - Everton chief executive Denise Barrett-Baxendale has set the Toffees a target of winning the Premier League and playing Champions League football in their new stadium during the next decade.
The Liverpool club have never lifted the Premier League trophy - they were last crowned champions of England in 1986/87 when they took the then First Division title to their current Goodison Park base.
Champions League football is also a rarity for Everton fans, with the club presently 11th in the Premier League table and 17 points adrift of a top-four spot that would secure a place among Europe's elite.
But Barrett-Baxendale, who on just the second day of her now eight-month tenure sacked manager Sam Allardyce and director of football Steve Walsh - believes Everton must aim high should they complete a proposed move to their new £500 million (S$865.9 million) stadium at Bramley-Moore.
Barrett-Baxendale, speaking at her first Everton shareholders meeting at Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall on Tuesday (Jan 8), said the club should be "challenging at the top of the Premier League and competing at the highest level in European competitions".
She added: "Ultimately this means challenging for domestic titles and trophies, not only to win cups, but to win Premier League titles too.
"It means competing regularly in the Champions League and it means doing all of this in a world-class, world-renowned football stadium."
Barrett-Baxendale, one of the most high-profile women in the traditionally male-dominated world of English football, admitted: "This is an extremely challenging goal. It is very much a long-term goal for our club but it is vital we are ambitious and that we deliver performances on and off the pitch that drives our club forward to achieve our ambitions.
"I acknowledge our vision is challenging, and the barriers to entry are indeed daunting, but we are Everton and we must all be focused and driven to meet that challenge."

Football: Man United miss out on top-four spot after 1-1 draw with relegated Huddersfield

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United's hopes of Champions League football next season were ended after an embarrassing 1-1 draw at already relegated Huddersfield on Sunday (May 5).
United have now won just two of their past 11 games in all competitions as Huddersfield ended a run of eight straight defeats despite goalkeeper Jonas Lossl's error handing the visitors an early lead through Scott McTominay.
Terrible defending from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men gave the Terriers something to celebrate in their final home game before heading down to the Championship as Isaac Mbenza levelled on the hour mark.
Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Watford means United fall four points outside the top four with just one game of the season to go.
And failure to beat statistically one of the worst teams ever to play in the Premier League will see further questions raised over the decision to hand Solskjaer a three-year contract in March.
The Norwegian has bemoaned United's lack of goals of late and recalled Alexis Sanchez to his starting line-up for the first time in two months in the search for more firepower.
But the Chilean again failed to live up to his status as the club's highest earner before limping off just before the hour mark.

Instead, the visitors had to rely on Huddersfield for a helping hand as McTominay's strike from the edge of the box went straight through Lossl's legs after just eight minutes.
United quickly got the game restarted as they sought more goals to improve their inferior goal difference compared to their rivals for a top-four finish.
However, even against a Huddersfield side that previously registered just 14 points all season, United could not press home their advantage.
Juan Mata curled inches wide after some neat interplay between Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba before Pogba also saw a looping header come back off the crossbar.
Solskjaer had kept faith with David de Gea in goal despite three high-profile errors leading to goals in his previous four games.
Huddersfield did not even test de Gea's nerve until five minutes before the break when Karlan Grant broke clear after an errant clearance from Phil Jones.
However, the Spaniard spread himself well to block a weak finish with his legs.
Huddersfield had scored only nine goals at home all season, but one hopeful punt from Lossl cut United open for the equaliser on the hour mark.
Luke Shaw failed to cut out the Danish goalkeeper's clearance and allowed Mbenza a clear run on goal to slot between de Gea's legs.
A lengthy delay then ensued as a new corner flag was found to replace the one Mbenza kicked over and snapped in celebration.
And the wait at least gave United time to awake from their slumber.
Rashford and teenager Tahith Chong, who replaced Sanchez, forced Lossl into saves low to his left.
Pogba then hit the crossbar for the second time in the game with a curling effort from the edge of the area.
But, in their desperation for a winner, United could have succumbed to another stunning defeat as de Gea was called on to deny Grant a memorable winner.

Football: Cristiano Ronaldo's Las Vegas rape accuser drops case, has filed another

LAS VEGAS (BLOOMBERG) - A rape lawsuit against Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo in Nevada state court that made headlines last year has been quietly dropped, but his accuser is now pursuing her claims in federal court.
A notice of voluntary dismissal was filed last month in state court in Las Vegas. The filing didn’t say why the case was dropped.
The woman accusing of the Portuguese soccer player of sexual assault, Kathryn Mayorga, filed a separate lawsuit in federal court in January making the same allegations.
Mayorga switched to federal court because state law in Nevada restricted her ability to serve a summons to appear in court on Ronaldo, who lives in Europe, her lawyers said in a February filing.
Ronaldo has publicly denied the allegations and never filed a response to the state court case, which sent his club’s club’s shares down 15 per cent when it was filed in September.
In the federal suit, Mayorga has asked the judge to allow for “alternative service” of a summons for Ronaldo because she doesn’t know his address in Italy. The judge denied the request but allowed an extra 180 days to serve him.
The New York Times reported in March that Juventus, the Italian league champions, wouldn’t participate in the International Champions Cup in the US this summer to avoid the risk that Ronaldo would be detained by authorities as part of a rape investigation.

In the state court complaint, Mayorga alleged she was sexually assaulted by Ronaldo in 2009 in his penthouse suite at a Las Vegas hotel. Mayorga said in the complaint that while she agreed to a settlement with Ronaldo after the alleged assault, she was experiencing severe emotional trauma at the time and wasn’t competent to participate in the mediation.
Peter Christiansen, a lawyer for Ronaldo, didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on the dismissal of the state court case.
A representative for Mayorga’s lawyer, Leslie Stovall, didn’t respond to a request for comment on why a new case was filed in federal court.
A five-time winner of soccer’s most prestigious award, the Ballon d’Or, Ronaldo is also the sport’s most popular player on social media. His marketing potential supercharged Juventus, with the stock price doubling in the months after the Turin-based team signed him from Spain’s Real Madrid on July 10.
Juventus is controlled by Italy’s Agnelli family, the biggest investors in carmaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
Following the lawsuit last year, Las Vegas police reopened an investigation of the rape allegations. The New York Times reported in January that law enforcement officials had requested a sample of the soccer player’s DNA from Italian authorities.
A spokeswoman for the police department said its investigation is still ongoing.

Football: Neymar's father says PSG extension more likely than Real Madrid switch for star

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Neymar's agent and father poured cold water over speculation the world's most expensive footballer was mulling a transfer and instead suggested a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain was more likely.
In an interview with Brazilian website UOL Esporte the 27-year-old's dad laughed off the idea of a switch to Real Madrid or elsewhere and said his son was more likely to extend his stay in the French capital where he is already under contract until 2022.
When asked directly about rumours linking Neymar with a move back to LaLiga either with Real Madrid or Barcelona the agent laughed off the idea.
"It is highly unlikely he will move anywhere," Neymar senior said.
"Neymar has switched clubs only twice in his entire career but for 10 years we have been living with speculation of an imminent switch.
"He's in his second year at PSG already. So there's another three years to come with his first contract, and we're already moving towards a renewal with Paris Saint-Germain," he added.
The striker made his name at Santos before signing for Barcelona in 2013, before the Parisians paid out his release clause of 222 million euros (S$343 million) in 2017.

Currently recovering from a foot injury, he told O Globo in Brazil two weeks ago a move to Madrid was not impossible.
"Anyone who had an offer from someone like Real Madrid would consider it. Right now I'm happy in Paris but in future anything can happen," said the player.
"But don't say I'm going to Madrid," he warned.
"I've already achieved my dream, everyone knows that was Barcelona."

Football: England games showed Jurgen Klopp I can play further forward, says Jordan Henderson

LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says performing well in an advanced midfield position for England helped convince manager Jurgen Klopp he could play a more attacking role for his club.
Klopp has used Henderson mainly as a defensive midfielder since taking charge of Liverpool, asking the 28-year-old to curb his attacking instincts and shield the back four.
"I can do both positions and (Klopp) sees I can do both, it's basically what he wants and needs," Henderson told reporters.
"I felt more comfortable... in (an advanced) position for England, creating chances and doing what I enjoy doing.
"I feel as though I can do more in a position further forward. Me and the gaffer had a conversation. Obviously he saw the England games... and it was something he said he'd think about."
Klopp deployed Henderson on the right of his midfield trio in Liverpool's last two games and the captain rewarded the manager with decisive contributions in each match.
He came off the bench and scored the final goal in Liverpool's 3-1 win over Southampton in the Premier League on Friday (April 5) and helped create the second in their 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg win over Porto on Tuesday (April 9).

The addition of defensive midfielder Fabinho at the start of the season helped make the decision to move Henderson further forward easier.
"In the last couple of years there hasn't really been a player like Fabinho in that role, so I've had to adapt," Henderson said. "I just thought that might give me a bit more licence to get forward more."
Liverpool, who lead the Premier League table by two points having played one game more than second-placed Manchester City, host third-placed Chelsea on Sunday (April 14).

Football: Liverpool back on top as late own goal secures 2-1 win over Tottenham

(AFP) - Liverpool moved back top of the Premier League in dramatic fashion as Toby Alderweireld's last-minute own goal beat Tottenham 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday (March 31).
Jurgen Klopp's side move two points clear of Manchester City once more at the top of the table, but City have a game in hand.
Liverpool's hopes of ending a 29-year wait to win the title looked set to be dealt a massive blow as Lucas Moura's strike 20 minutes from time cancelled out Roberto Firmino's early opener.
However, Hugo Lloris could only palm Mohamed Salah's header into the path of the unfortunate Alderweireld to condemn Tottenham to a fourth defeat in five Premier League games.
Spurs are now in serious danger of crashing out of the top four as they remain level on points with Manchester United and could be usurped by north London rivals Arsenal into third should the Gunners beat Newcastle on Monday.
And the visitors will be left to regret a huge missed chance by Moussa Sissoko five minutes from time when Liverpool were wobbling.
The hosts had got off to the perfect start when Firmino headed home the opener on 16 minutes from a delightful Andy Robertson cross.

That was Robertson's 12th assist of the season from left-back and the Scotland captain was involved again in a flowing move moments later as he forged down the left and neat touches from Salah, and Georginio Wijnaldum teed up Sadio Mane to curl just wide.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino was serving the last of a two-game touchline ban and without the guiding hand of the Argentine, they lacked inspiration in the final third.
However, Liverpool were often causing their own problems by gifting away possession inside their own half and Dele Alli pounced on a slack pass by his England teammate Jordan Henderson to power a volley that dipped just over the bar with Spurs' best effort of the first-half.
Virgil van Dijk had a great chance to double the hosts' lead at the start of the second period, but the Dutch defender headed over after a well-worked short corner between Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Milner.
However, Liverpool were thankful again to Robertson at the other end as he made a vital block to prevent Christian Eriksen firing home the rebound after Alisson Becker was forced into his first save of the afternoon by Harry Kane.
When these two sides met at Anfield last season, Salah scored one his many goal of the season candidates amidst an incredible 44-goal campaign.
The Egyptian still has a respectable 20 this season, but only one of those has come in the last 11 games and he passed up a great chance to give Liverpool some badly needing breathing space when his shot was blocked by Alderweireld with Mane better placed and begging for a pass.
That missed opportunity looked costly as Tottenham struck back. Kane's quick thinking and excellent long-range pass picked out Kieran Trippier, who fed Eriksen and his scuffed shot fell perfectly for Moura to turn home.
As Liverpool surged forward in search of a winner, Spurs could have picked them off as Sissoko blazed over with just Alisson to beat before Alli clipped a shot inches wide.
Instead, there was delirium in front of the Kop end as Lloris should have handled Salah's header, but instead parried the ball into Alderweireld and the ball ricocheted over the line to breathe fresh life into Liverpool's title challenge.
